      Dried Fruit Compote

It’s become my mission over the past year to hunt down healthy desserts. When we were young, ‘pudding’ was a rare occasion reserved for social outings, family get-togethers and birthdays. I came back from Oxford to discover that they had morphed into a nightly event. I’m not complaining though  – I’ll greedily seize any opportunity to bake. However, eating self-saucing puddings, cheesecakes, brownies and other such indulgent items every night isn’t a healthy habit. And not one I planned on sustaining – some people (I’m looking at my sister here) could eat the moon and still remain beanpole thin, but we aren’t all blessed with those genes. I thus needed to come up with some sort of compromise. I needed to create desserts that incorporated the taste & sense of indulgence found in my sister’s favourites, yet didn’t require bucket loads of sugar and butter. Continue reading →

Anyone who’s spent a decent amount of time with me would know that I’m inclined to have a ‘jittery’ disposition when it comes to certain situations. Competitions, exams, starting something new – and for some strange reason concerts – all get me hyped up on a mixture of nerves and excitement. In the lead up to such events I find it very hard to sit still. I have to be occupied. Kept busy. Doing something. And referably something that feels productive. Saturday morning was a double whammy – a job interview in the morning and netball grand final in the early afternoon. Fortunately, I’ve become much better at channeling all that nervous energy.  I have reached the point in  which I no longer drive anyone near me up the wall. Cooking takes me to my ‘zen’ place, where all that matters is the measuring and mixing. There’s no match points, no tricky questions, no new people. Just me and the recipe. I can get as angry/frustrated as I like at it and it doesn’t matter. In these situations I also like to feel as prepared as possible. That includes providing my body with decent fuel. This Saturday quinoa for brekky seemed a good place to start. Continue reading →

So I’m sitting on the couch about to write this post, armed with a mug of green tea and square of Lindt 70% dark chocolate (my antioxidant hit for the day is well and truly sorted!) Presumably I’m all set to go. I start typing out the ingredients, nibbling away on that square of chocolate. All is well. And then my mind starts wandering. “Hmmm what shall I bake this afternoon? A loaf? Yes a loaf sounds good. What type of loaf? Perhaps a pumpkin one? Or maybe a fruity one?” The next thing I know, the chocolate is gone, my cup of tea is almost finished and I haven’t typed a single word in at least fifteen minutes. Now, I don’t struggle with short attention spans and I pride myself in only daydreaming on the train/bus/when exercising (and perhaps in some super boring lectures – trial balance sheets anyone?). So what’s my problem? As soon as I have finished preparing one meal I can’t help but start speculating about the next. Food is on my mind an awful lot of the time. Probably too much. I’m starting to wonder if one of the lobes in my brain isn’t hardwired to all things food. Continue reading →

This omelette is proof that becoming vegetarian has nudged me into becoming far more adventurous with my food. If you had asked me a few years ago what I thought about sweet omelettes I would have laughed in your face. “That’s daft, omelettes are meant to be cheesy!” I would have exclaimed. However during my morning stroll on Sunday I started musing about what I wanted to make for breakfast. I was craving something eggy but didn’t feel particularly enthusiastic about a savoury dish. French toast felt too heavy and I didn’t have the patience for a clafoutis. It was time to think laterally. Continue reading →

There is something innately enchanting about a bright, crisp morning. I have discovered both to my joy and horror that during winter the sun shines directly through my bedroom window in the early morning. Some days I just grumble and pile a mound of pillows over my head to block the sunlight out. However, most mornings (when it actually is sunny) I find it to be a wonderful incentive to leap out of bed and embrace the day. Today was one of those mornings, one where you can’t help but feel happy. Rather than going for a run as I usually do before breakfast, I opted to rug up and head out for a short stroll (such a peaceful word, isn’t it?). The combination of bright blue skies, frosty green grass and the bone-numbing cold – well 5C is cold by Sydney standards – creates an almost ethereal atmosphere. That’s if you are able to ignore the streams of cars going by and the sounds of early morning construction work! It seems as though many of my most precious memories are of these kinds of mornings – running past the college rowers on the Thames in Oxford, an early morning walk in the Snowy Mountains on a family holiday and so on. Consequently I take on the persona of an elderly person, reminiscing about this and that until someone eventually tells me to shut up. Continue reading →
