    • Blog Update

You may (or may not have, and that’s fine too) noticed that I have not been active around these parts for over a year. University and life in general has taken over so that sadly blogging has not been feasible. I’ll be WWOOFING and in general exploring the wonderful world of small holder food production and preparation in Europe until the end of June. Thus the inactivity here will continue for the foreseeable future!

On my return to Australia I’ll be finding my feet post-university: hopefully combining a degree in Anthropology and Sociology with this insatiable passion for food sustainability. So continue to enjoy the recipes and laugh, as I do, at some of the shoddy photos (going back to that old adage of don’t judge a book, or in this case recipe, by its cover). But do keep in mind that the posts over the last three years no longer necessarily exactly reflect my thoughts regarding food waste, consumption, preparation and so on.

I hope to return to blogging sometime in the near future, with a new, improved format and a matured perspective, but for the meantime it is exactly that – sometime in the future! Until then, cheerio.

There’s barely been a moment to breathe these last four weeks. That fickle balance between boredom and being the busiest bee out and about is as elusive as ever. As a result sanity begins to slip by the wayside. You get snappy at the teensiest of issues, a special song makes you burst into tears out of the blue, and for the first time (apart from when you’ve been bedridden with illness) you sacrifice exercise for more sleep. Because you just can’t seem to get enough of it. We all have our tipping points and someone is teetering on the edge of theirs. But the safety rope is close by. The knots and weaves are different for everyone – those things, oft a combination of the peculiar and mundane – that keep you from fall face-first off the edge. Make it your mission to learn them. To draw on them when necessary. Continue reading →

Pumpkin, Zucchini, Sundried Tomato, Spinach, Ricotta & Bocconcini Pizza

All good things take time. That’s a given. And it most certainly applies to the case of the humble pizza. Sure, you can whip up a reasonable pizza within an hour, but if you want to go the whole hog (which, honestly, why wouldn’t you) it’s going to take a little more elbow grease. The winning combination involves a homemade sauce, a homemade base and lovingly prepared vegetables. Singing a crooning tune to the pizza while it is in the oven doesn’t hurt either. If you’re going to commit, commit 100%. You’ll be rewarded with a brightly coloured, gloriously flavorsome, sublimely textured specimen. Oozing, melty blobs (what a word, blob) of bocconcini adorn the sweet pumpkin pieces. Dollops of salty, creamy ricotta contrast with the richness and ‘pop’ of tomato sauce. Teensy leaves of basil make the pizza look oh-so-pretty and provide a hint of freshness. This pizza = a marvellous trip to heaven. It’s a given. Continue reading →

Wait. No. Stop. Don’t do that. It’ll end badly. You know it will. It’s happened before. Back to the essay. I said get back to it. Ah. Well you’ve done it now. Might as well read one recipe. Or two. Or hmmm what was that breakfast you’ve been wanting to make for absolutely ages? Have you sent it to your sister yet (continuing to fill her inbox with food-related spam)? No. C’mon. Wilderness remember. You’re writing about wilderness, and how civilisation is bad for the soul. Not about food. So you need to stop writing this, and get back to that. 900 words is not a sufficient stopping point. You just got up five minutes ago to make tea. Yes it was green tea with lemon, and that’s essential to essay writing when you hit the 800 word mark, but another 100 words doesn’t deserve celebration just yet. You’ll lose your train of thought. Jeez don’t panic now! You’re likely to lose it faster. So click on the little X button and calmly make your way back to the essay-writing screen. You can do this. It’s possible. You’ve only written about 72 university level essays before (yes you can be proud of yourself for doing some speedy-gonazales maths there). Gawd that’s a sad existence isn’t it. But some are actually interesting topics and that helps…Such as this one. So get back to it dammit! Continue reading →

      Chilli Bean Rolls

These Chilli Bean Rolls are hands down a firm family favourite. Credit must go to the little sister for coming across the recipe when she was a wee lass, and begging for it to be made. Anything that involved pastry, the word ‘chilli’ and cheese put the cheeky tacker in food-heaven.  Despite being able to devour a mind boggling number of these in the one sitting, she remained as thin as a rake: one of those super slender kids who was adorable but also scared the beejesus out of you when you rugby tackled them: a) because you thought you might accidently break them and b) because they actually fought back with a strength you had no idea they had. I seem to recall (although my memory is so foggy at present that it’s like being in the forbidden forest, unable to see your feet in front of you) that the deal was if she wanted them that bad for dinner, she could make them. And so she did. Continue reading →
