Wait. No. Stop. Don’t do that. It’ll end badly. You know it will. It’s happened before. Back to the essay. I said get back to it. Ah. Well you’ve done it now. Might as well read one recipe. Or two. Or hmmm what was that breakfast you’ve been wanting to make for absolutely ages? Have you sent it to your sister yet (continuing to fill her inbox with food-related spam)? No. C’mon. Wilderness remember. You’re writing about wilderness, and how civilisation is bad for the soul. Not about food. So you need to stop writing this, and get back to that. 900 words is not a sufficient stopping point. You just got up five minutes ago to make tea. Yes it was green tea with lemon, and that’s essential to essay writing when you hit the 800 word mark, but another 100 words doesn’t deserve celebration just yet. You’ll lose your train of thought. Jeez don’t panic now! You’re likely to lose it faster. So click on the little X button and calmly make your way back to the essay-writing screen. You can do this. It’s possible. You’ve only written about 72 university level essays before (yes you can be proud of yourself for doing some speedy-gonazales maths there). Gawd that’s a sad existence isn’t it. But some are actually interesting topics and that helps…Such as this one. So get back to it dammit! Continue reading →

The theme of today’s post is being in a rush. That frantic action-stations kind of rush where you either slip into complete zen mode and float through the situation to your destination/goal, or where you run around like a headless chook/fall over your own feet/sit on the floor paralysed by how you’re not going to make it. There’s also that rather unique kind, one that results in you taking rather shoddy photographs (see exhibits a, b, c and d on this post) because you’re far too eager to consume the food being photographed. Which is ironic really, as it means the photos do very little justice to the specimen that is in fact knee-tremblingly tasty. You’ll just have to take my word for it: these muffins are to.die.for. And you won’t even die from them – each muffin contains just ¼ tsp olive oil and ¼ tsp sugar! Continue reading →

Somehow blogging tends to reveal facts about oneself that are usually kept tightly under wraps. Like alcohol it brings to the surface those quirks you only share with the very closest of friends. The terrible out of tune singing along to Taylor Swift (and that you know every.single.word), the shocking dance moves, the fact you can talk until the cows come home (and then some), the snorting when you truly laugh. Writing/blogging is a far easier method of divulging such quirks than in person. Another form of liquid confidence. And thus it’s important to know where your limits lie. We all know that far too much (of either) often leads to making a fool of yourself/doing or revealing something you regret…you know how it goes. Continue reading →

It’s university exam number one tomorrow. That means at this point in time zilch brain power remains. Coherent sentences…what are they again? I was trawling through my rapidly dwindling ‘back up collection’ and came across this from mid-last year. Clearly it had been left, abandoned, in the depths of the folder due to a) the terrible photos and b) the slightly mortifying writing skills. Now, I began to touch up both and then stopped. Isn’t there something quite grounding about acknowledging that you’ve produced a work/done something that wasn’t quite perfect? And about leaving it that way. Not beating yourself up about it. To remember that life’s about balance, not perfection. To have a laugh about it if you can (and hope to god things have improved somewhat since then) and move on. Here is one such example, ‘not-so-pretty’ bits and all. Continue reading →

What are you doing this mother’s day? Are you a cynic who slanders the mere thought of yet another commercialised holiday? Soppy cards, posh lunch deals, spa breaks, the lot. Do you quietly moan, yet celebrate it anyway in a more subtle manner? A bunch of fresh flowers or breakfast in bed. Or, do you wholeheartedly embrace the opportunity to celebrate? Flowers, cards, breakfast, lunch and a spa break to boot. I’m always torn when it comes to such events. Is it rude to ignore them? It is it an overt display of consumerism to embrace them? In the end I usually decide that ‘celebration’ is justified a) if the card is homemade (and by you, not from that funky store down the road) and b) if it involves good food (again, homemade is preferable). Continue reading →
