Wait. No. Stop. Don’t do that. It’ll end badly. You know it will. It’s happened before. Back to the essay. I said get back to it. Ah. Well you’ve done it now. Might as well read one recipe. Or two. Or hmmm what was that breakfast you’ve been wanting to make for absolutely ages? Have you sent it to your sister yet (continuing to fill her inbox with food-related spam)? No. C’mon. Wilderness remember. You’re writing about wilderness, and how civilisation is bad for the soul. Not about food. So you need to stop writing this, and get back to that. 900 words is not a sufficient stopping point. You just got up five minutes ago to make tea. Yes it was green tea with lemon, and that’s essential to essay writing when you hit the 800 word mark, but another 100 words doesn’t deserve celebration just yet. You’ll lose your train of thought. Jeez don’t panic now! You’re likely to lose it faster. So click on the little X button and calmly make your way back to the essay-writing screen. You can do this. It’s possible. You’ve only written about 72 university level essays before (yes you can be proud of yourself for doing some speedy-gonazales maths there). Gawd that’s a sad existence isn’t it. But some are actually interesting topics and that helps…Such as this one. So get back to it dammit! Continue reading →

Gee it’s been a while. Scratch that. A fair bit more than a while. The past few months have seen me picked up by a cyclone, whirled about, flipped into the eye for a brief moment of calm, and then thrown headfirst back into the whirlpool of uni/college/work/travel/life-in-general. I’m close to being spat out for good. Whumped down on the ground, hair mussed up (I really should get it cut – been meaning to for weeks now – not that you want to know), rather exhausted but otherwise unscathed (here’s hoping). You’ll be hearing far more from this scatter-brain after that. Give it six weeks or so. And I’ve missed you. No, seriously. I don’t do soppy but amidst the crazy happenings of the past few months, there’s been an ouchie in my chest that continues to expand ever so slightly as time goes on. A void that craves connection with the culinary world – to invent, to cook, to write, to discuss, heck to even be haunted by it in your dreams. And no that doesn’t mean being chased by a giant saucepan – there are those of you out there who’ll know what I mean. I’ve maybe even missed photographing. Now that means something. I’m telling you. Ahhh another baking blunder. They seem to happen far more frequently than I’d like to admit. Or perhaps that’s because like with all ‘mistakes’ or embarrassing moments they tend to stick in one’s mind. Stand out. To act as reminders. Don’t do that again. No really, don’t. This particular boo-boo however, I will be repeating. On purpose. Take that you careful, cautious brain. At cookery school it was drilled into us “thou shalt not mess with baking recipes. Especially pastry.” Repeatedly. You’d go home on the bus muttering it under your breath. I can tell you that attracts some strange looks. Especially when you’ve still got a smear of flour on your face and butter on your arms. Why don’t people tell you? Is it funny? But yes we knew loud and clear not to mess with pastry. From the way our teachers ranted on and on and on about it, one was sure they would stimulate an apocalypse-style situation if one so much as measured our flour out one gram too much. First recipe post for 2013 2014! We’ll get there with the date change. It usually clicks in around March. Anywho, how are those goals (we’re not calling them resolutions, remember) going? Wavering on any yet? I surely hope not. Just when you thought you were done with all that New Year philosophical rah-rah, here’s a few more lifestyle changes to consider. With the help of these Apple Pecan Cinnamon Rolls of course. If you’ve already got the following ‘ideals’ down pat, good for you. We’ll let you keep that smug grin. For the moment, anyway. Give it a few hours and it’ll be replaced with one of blissed out happiness. Light and fluffy with a sweet, nutty filling. Drizzled with an oozy, sticky maple topping. Don’t say I didn’t warn you about the side effects. What exactly are you going to learn from these Apple Pecan Cinnamon Rolls, apart from that they’re addictive with a capital A?  Let’s get started on those tasty life lessons. Continue reading →
