Gee it’s been a while. Scratch that. A fair bit more than a while. The past few months have seen me picked up by a cyclone, whirled about, flipped into the eye for a brief moment of calm, and then thrown headfirst back into the whirlpool of uni/college/work/travel/life-in-general. I’m close to being spat out for good. Whumped down on the ground, hair mussed up (I really should get it cut – been meaning to for weeks now – not that you want to know), rather exhausted but otherwise unscathed (here’s hoping). You’ll be hearing far more from this scatter-brain after that. Give it six weeks or so. And I’ve missed you. No, seriously. I don’t do soppy but amidst the crazy happenings of the past few months, there’s been an ouchie in my chest that continues to expand ever so slightly as time goes on. A void that craves connection with the culinary world – to invent, to cook, to write, to discuss, heck to even be haunted by it in your dreams. And no that doesn’t mean being chased by a giant saucepan – there are those of you out there who’ll know what I mean. I’ve maybe even missed photographing. Now that means something. I’m telling you. Coconut Jam Slice

Every year as the cold weather sets in I staunchly declare that I will stick to my fitness regime, that I won’t succumb to those fatty/sugary/salty cravings and that I won’t complain about the rain/wind/grey skies. Hmph. Who are you kidding girl? When those sneaky winter blues and the “I-want-to-face-plant-into-a-bowl-of-fresh-summer berries, or more likely, a-big-fat-double chocolate-brownie-mm-mm” mindset emerges it’s good to be reminded that winter is a superb season. It provides a multitude of delicious culinary opportunities – soups, hearty stews, various bakes and pies resplendent with seasonal veg such as beetroot, cauliflower, brussel sprouts (yes, brussel sprouts), leeks, silverbeet and sweet potato…the list goes on. However, if you thought this was going to be a post incorporating some of the aforementioned healthy veg, you’ll be sadly mistaken. Despite the wonderful array of healthy seasonal recipes available, it’s the pastries, sweets and rich cheesy, cheesy, cheesy dishes that beckon.  Let’s blame it on our ancestors – after all they were hardwired to reduce their energy expenditure and increase their consumption of calorie dense foods as the air turned chilly. Mole-like burrowing under the duvet and second helpings of pudding is therefore justified. Just sayin’. Continue reading →

      Lemon Squares

Ahem, this post may or may not have been penned as a ‘back-up’ over the summer. But hey, there are times when that preparation becomes handy dandy. It’s inevitable. Times like now. Fresher or ‘O week’ of University is in full swing and spare minutes, let alone an hour, have been rare. Things’ll go back to normal around here eventually…in the meantime here’s some cake. Cake is good. Right?

Light, luscious lemon squares. Nothing like getting some good alliteration going. Hey, some people liked English at school. Nothing to be ashamed of. Well, not much. There’s also nothing quite like the perfect mouthful of summer. Sweet as a pea with a refreshing lemony twist, these dainty pale yellow sponge squares are reminiscent of an English garden tea party. Of course if you’re trying to please the more macho personality, simply hack it into big slabs and slather with a double quantity of icing. Nothing elegant about that. Either way, it’s a smashing treat. Continue reading →

Today is one of those days that makes you want to leap around like a baby deer in spring. Why? Because it feels like spring! That’s not stating the obvious too much is it? Now, I know it is only mid July so technically we are only halfway through winter. I probably shouldn’t get too  eager should I? The thing is, it’s kind of hard not to feel joyous when the sun is shining and it’s currently 23.3C (yes I’m a weather nerd). It’s the kind of weather that calls for sitting in the garden and sunning your legs. Is really sad that I’m ecstatic to be wearing a skirt again? After spending the last week with a terrible head cold and sounding like Janice from Friends I feel as though a healthy ‘glow’ is in order. A little vitamin D to help keep future colds at bay. Action Packed Hiking Bars

Dad’s last request before leaving for his long-weekend hiking trip was “stock up the freezer!” Now that’s a dangerous phrase as I could easily have used it as an excuse to spend the whole weekend baking. However, I barely successfully managed to rein myself in and settle for a few freezer ‘must-haves’. One of which was the granola-style bar that he takes on hikes. For me one of the wonderful things about spending time ‘out bush’ is the sensation of being a million miles away from civilisation. Often that is far from the case – the road may in fact be a couple hundred metres away, yet one can’t help but feel peaceful. In such situations I also tend to dwell on Western society and how materialistically driven we have become – who needs a car when you have two legs to carry you? And why bother with razors and shower gel – surely it is possible to put up with fuzzy legs? The last thing I want is any reminder of how we become entrenched in a cycle of sating consumerist needs. So rather than pulling out a store bought, glaringly packaged muesli bar when the munchies set in, these hiking bars are a wonderful alternative. Continue reading →
