It’s Sunday night. You can be of two minds right now. Apprehensive about the week ahead and the many tasks it entails. Or as pleased as the cat that got the cream with the weekend that’s been. It’s your choice. You may even be lucky enough to have a wondiferous week ahead and be feeling just plain good about everything. Sunday nights can fulfil many purposes, however they are not for wallowing. If you’re anxious about the coming week, or forlornly pondering why it has to be that the weekend is over, pick something good that’s happened in the last two days and use it to perk your up your last few hours until that Monday morning menace of an alarm goes off. So what’s it going to be? This Choco-Banana Smoothie is mine. Continue reading →

What are you doing this mother’s day? Are you a cynic who slanders the mere thought of yet another commercialised holiday? Soppy cards, posh lunch deals, spa breaks, the lot. Do you quietly moan, yet celebrate it anyway in a more subtle manner? A bunch of fresh flowers or breakfast in bed. Or, do you wholeheartedly embrace the opportunity to celebrate? Flowers, cards, breakfast, lunch and a spa break to boot. I’m always torn when it comes to such events. Is it rude to ignore them? It is it an overt display of consumerism to embrace them? In the end I usually decide that ‘celebration’ is justified a) if the card is homemade (and by you, not from that funky store down the road) and b) if it involves good food (again, homemade is preferable). Banana Bread

*Note: I actually penned this post waaaaaayyyy back in July, however with the small matter of moving across the country I’ve neither had the time nor energy to cook/photograph/write. Fortunately this recipe actually relates to the past few days. It’s been extremely confusing returning to small town Western Australia after 18 months away and what with the jet-lag and general moving related exhaustion the only thing I particularly feel like doing is face-planting into a big slice of warm, buttered banana bread. Or the whole loaf. Continue reading →

I never thought I would be one to jump on the green smoothie bandwagon. It resided in the realm of healthy-but-too-weird. Sure I’m smitten with banana smoothies, particularly if they contain a dash of nutmeg and cinnamon. Berry smoothies are blissful and the colour alone is enough to brighten ones day. Mango, passionfruit, papaya…all fine with me. But a smoothie that is green and has vegetables in it? I think I’ll pass, thank you very much. I strongly believe that you should never judge a book by its cover, yet the words green and smoothie just don’t correlate in my head. Surely it must be some kind of evil witchy brew? Or at least like the medicine that mum used to force-feed you, extremely good for you but awful all the same. I was positive that green vegetables and smoothies should not exist on the same wavelength. Just no. That was until I chided myself for being a chicken and decided to take the jump. In recent times their popularity has skyrocketed, and that either means that everyone has taken leave of their senses and transformed into green smoothie monsters, or heaven forbid, they actually taste pretty good. Vegan Carrot Walnut Cookies

My last foray into baking vegan cookies was met by the comment “they taste vegan”. Well, duh. Yet the inflection suggested that by making them vegan, I was committing a crime against cookies. According to this ‘higher power’ vegan is the witchiepoo of the baking realm. It was clear that any future sorties with vegan baking would be met with significant apprehension and – most probably – displeasure.  That’s a pretty negative and narrow perspective don’t you think? I must admit the cookies in question were quite horrid – I only ate them in a stubborn attempt to pretend that my cooking surely couldn’t produce anything that bad. I should have swallowed my pride and saved my taste buds from some unnecessary torture. Despite that first abortive attempt at vegan baking, I remained unperturbed. Just because one recipe was a shocker, didn’t mean that they all would be. Right? And they couldn’t be any more horrid than cookies that tasted like concrete. Well, I sincerely hoped not.
