      Warm Roast Vegetable Hummus Wraps

I’ve upped my game at Christmas. But not in the sense you may think. In that this year I let go entirely of the restrictive mindset. Ate whatever the hell I wanted. Faced the immediate consequences. Of sugar rushes. Of feeling far too full to be comfortable. Of having to lay sprawled out on the floor on my stomach, in front of the air conditioner to try and combat the food sweats. First round of dessert, followed by a main meal of red and green M&Ms, and finished with a second round of dessert was a thing. It might seem ridiculous to be proud of letting go, of indulging (okay, maybe over-indulging at times). But for someone who for the last three years has battled with over-monitoring their food, with eating far less than they really should have, it’s a big step. Things have been improving significantly in recent times – there’s still been stabs of guilt and/or the pangs of ignored hunger, but they’re rapidly reducing in frequency and ferocity. Last night I waged war with a fit ball. I’m disinclined to say I lost. For it’s not over yet. We’ll do battle again shortly. Being ever so thoughtful, the little sis sent over her spare fit ball for me to use (I think she’s somewhat excited I’m finally actually and seriously dedicating a significant amount of time to ‘getting flexible’). It was deflated and all ready to be pumped up with the pump that she sent in the second package (because, well it may have been forgotten the first time round). The excitement built as I waited for that second package to arrive. The fit ball was there sitting on the middle of my floor, ready to be restored to it’s former, bouncy and inflated glory. I sat down on the couch and looked at it. How best to tackle the task ahead? Just get in and do it I guess. So I pumped, and pumped and pumped. After what felt like simply hours of working at a teeny, flimsy pump the ball began to slowly take shape. To rise out of it’s crumpled state. As we neared the perfect spherical shape that it should be we hit a major hurdle. I pulled at the pump to remove the needle and stopper the valve with the little stopper fandangle provided. Nothing happened. I pulled again. This time the pump did budge, and so quickly that it nearly knocked me out, however the needle was left behind. Clearly they were no longer friends. It had been too arduous an affair for the both of them to stay together. No amount of prying or pulling could remove the darn little thing from the valve, which by the way appeared to have magically shrunk during the inflating of the ball. Slowly but surely the fit ball began to deflate with a quiet hiss. It didn’t like being pumped up, no thank you. Muttering and cursing under the breath failed to persuade the ball to release the needle. In a fit of rage I fled to the shower, hoping things would be magically fixed upon my return. Not the case. The fit ball looked at me from it’s perch on the couch like a sad, saggy old man’s belly, slowly sinking towards the ground. Damn you fitball. Continue reading →

      Porotos Granados

Porotos Granados. Is it a soup? Is it a stew? No-one will ever know. This version of the Spanish dish is confused but happy. Like me a lot of the time. I guess you could call it a chunky soup. Not that it particularly matters. Why do we always feel as though we have to define everything? What if you don’t want to be the ‘girl next door’ or the ‘crazy bitch’ or the ‘cute geek’? This dish could be feeling the exact same thing. It doesn’t want to be pinned down by labels, nuh-uh! It’s its own individual self. Quirks and all. It’s sweet from the butternut squash and corn, slightly spicy from the smoked paprika, creamy from the sweet potato and borlotti beans and just damn delectable with the addition of oregano and caraway seeds. And Asparagus is in season, big yay! Sure, you’re always going to face the conundrum of whether to eat it with a spoon or a fork, but if that’s the biggest issue you face for the day I think you can handle it. Why, try both! No, not one in each hand…ah you know what I mean. Continue reading →

I’ve been distinctly depressed this week. Perhaps that’s a misuse of the term. Not in a serious-mental-health-sense, but more so the downhearted, disconsolate kind. What triggered this bout of dejectedness? I ashamed to say. Twas the film Insurgent. Alrighty, don’t judge too harshly! More specifically (and in a similar line to the Hunger Games etc. – i.e. those kinds of movies) it was the female protagonist in particular who prompted this downhearted spell. Why? They’re so goddam baddass it hurts. Never fail, every time I watch these kinds of films I want to a) be them or b) become a stunt artist. Neither of which is going to happen. Reality check. It’s not the killing, heart/gut wrenching situations, the perpetual fear/anxiety or even the complicated-yet-passionate blooming romance I’m after, nuh-uh. It’s that sense of being strong, of giving it absolutely everything and then some more, of wholly devoting yourself to a cause/situation. Of being fearless – “take my hand, drag me headfirst, fearless” (obligatory T-Swizzle reference there; it appears we’re letting loose with all the dorky confessions today!). Continue reading →

We haven’t had a curry recipe around these parts for a very long time. In fact, it’s been over a year since this fella (and to top it off the photos are perhaps the very worst I’ve taken. Ever.) How is it possible that I’ve only give you one measly curry recipe during tastewithoutwaste’s lifetime? Despicable. It would appear that curry’s are a rare event in my kitchen. Not true. We like our curry’s yes indeedy. However, you may argue that this does not classify as a curry. It’s not spicy in a set-your-tongue-on-fire manner. It’s at the mildest end of the term mild. But that’s okay. It’s still curry (at least in my book) and curry is always welcome. Especially in the heart of winter. Which in Australia it isn’t any more – we hit twenty degrees (celsius) today people, twenty! But no matter. Continue reading →
