      Porotos Granados

Porotos Granados. Is it a soup? Is it a stew? No-one will ever know. This version of the Spanish dish is confused but happy. Like me a lot of the time. I guess you could call it a chunky soup. Not that it particularly matters. Why do we always feel as though we have to define everything? What if you don’t want to be the ‘girl next door’ or the ‘crazy bitch’ or the ‘cute geek’? This dish could be feeling the exact same thing. It doesn’t want to be pinned down by labels, nuh-uh! It’s its own individual self. Quirks and all. It’s sweet from the butternut squash and corn, slightly spicy from the smoked paprika, creamy from the sweet potato and borlotti beans and just damn delectable with the addition of oregano and caraway seeds. And Asparagus is in season, big yay! Sure, you’re always going to face the conundrum of whether to eat it with a spoon or a fork, but if that’s the biggest issue you face for the day I think you can handle it. Why, try both! No, not one in each hand…ah you know what I mean. Continue reading →

If cooking could be a person, it’d be your best mate. Not a partner – that’d just be too creepy. But a real keeper all the same. It’s there for you through thick and thin. To witness the good, the bad, the plain weird, and everything in between. The crazy dancing around the kitchen to Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Dancing in the Dark’ moments. The bleary eyed pajama-clad pancake sessions (where you don’t even attempt to flip the pancake as your coordination most definitely hasn’t woken up yet). The oven-died-just-as-the-cheesecake-needed-to-go-in tantrums (foot stomping included). The heartbroken pizza-dough kneading, tears silently running down one’s face. The fist pumping when your Charlotte Russe turns out of the mould. Perfectly. The trying to juggle too many things at once moments, such as making lasagne while clad in bright green running shorts and a hot pink sports bra, with a floral apron thrown over the top (so you can exercise while it’s cooking, of course!). Let’s just say that opening the door to receive a parcel resulted in one very confused mailman. Let’s not talk about that. Like it or not, cooking’s seen the very best and worst of you. Apparently it is possible to have too much of a good thing. I’ve had plenty of opportunities to blog over the last fortnight, yet have not felt the inclination to do so. On arriving back at my mother’s home I made a beeline for the kitchen and immediately donned my apron. Unpacking could wait. An immense about of cooking ensued over the following days, with three dishes on the first evening alone. After twelve weeks of virtually being starved of all forms of cooking it was bliss to be back in the kitchen. However, spending nigh on a week relentlessly stirring, chopping, whipping, icing, baking, boiling and photographing takes it’s toll. In an I-don’t-want-to-even-think-about-food kind of way. Now that my friends is a rare occasion. Continue reading →

      Mushroom Soup

We’ve had some classic Autumn weather this week. Slap-in-your-face cold mornings that slowly give way to brisk yet bright days. The sunlight dapples through the trees, highlighting the changes in leaf colour – from green to yellow to almost red (it’s still a little early yet for the ‘proper’ Autumn shades). This area of Melbourne is blessed with many large, ancient (well I like to think they are) deciduous trees. No, they aren’t native, yet you can’t help but think that if they’re already there why shouldn’t we admire their splendour? Such days call for a bowl of piping hot soup, so warm that it fogs up your glasses (if you so happen to wear them) when you raise the spoon to your lips. Prior to a trip to Edinburgh (in August 2012, to be exact) I avoided mushroom soup like the plague. I mean mushrooms are fantastic, no doubt about it, but mushroom soup? No thank you, mister. That’s taking the dedication a little too far. Continue reading →

Spring. Blooming flowers, lambs, ducklings, the first (decent) strawberries. Happy days. But not entirely. It’s also that awkward in-between period when the weather doesn’t know what to do with itself, jumping from rain to bright skies and sunshine in moments. This year the change was so rapid that we went from relying on the heaters one day to contemplating dragging out the air conditioner the next. This is my first full year in Sydney, so I’m not expert on the subject, however I’m pretty sure that 29C on the last day of Winter (and the week of high 20’s that followed) is decidedly unusual. The change felt quite final when I ventured out for my early morning run on Tuesday and no longer felt the cold bite of air on my face. Instead I was confronted by a warm wind. Sad times, I’m telling you, sad times.

There’s no question that it’s a tantalising season – conjuring thoughts of languid days at the beach. It’s also bittersweet – no more excuses for hours spent curled up on the sofa with a mug of hot chocolate and good book. Am I the only that feels confused with the onset of spring? In the past week I’ve spent hours excitedly trawling the net for summer dresses and bikinis (it’s a tactic designed to prevent me spending money as I’m less tempted to actually buy anything). At the same time, I’ve also come to the depressing realisation that it’s now far too late to try making that Autumn Vegetable Stew recipe I bookmarked way back in April. Behind the times? Just a bit.
