      Fruit, Seed & Walnut Bread

Going out for breakfast to celebrate special occasions/the completion of something significant is a tradition in my family. Fortunately it didn’t take much to cajole two of my housemates into doing so after I had finished working at the Australian Open. We ventured to a brilliant joint on the other side of Melbourne and were duly rewarded with the three meals we ordered. However (there’s always a however isn’t there?) I was also able to smugly proclaim that whilst their fig, apricot and pistachio loaf was very tasty indeed, it did not quite live up to that made by yours truly. Boastful? Moi? Let’s just say that this Fruit, Seed & Walnut Bread is one of the best things you’ll ever put down your gullet. Modest, I know. Continue reading →

Running in the rain raises one of the most tricky of questions in life. Is it bad for you? You’re sopping wet, you might be cold. You’re bound to get a cold. Or is it good for you? What’s a little moisture going to do? You sweat anyway! You’ve still exercised, you’re probably feeling pretty damn chuffed with yourself for going out there and battling the elements. I’m inclined to lean towards the latter – why, as long as you dry off properly once you reach shelter, there’s really no harm done. And splashing in the puddles is good for the soul, is it not? These Date, Walnut and Maple Steamed Puddings put one in a similar conundrum. Are they unhealthy? I mean, they are dessert after all. Or are they healthy, relatively speaking? Continue reading →

Uni classes have officially finished for the semester, with this week dedicated to study prior to exams commencing. It’s a little over half way through day one of revision, revision and yet more revision and I’m already dreaming of all the baking I could be doing in another life. The kind of baking that requires little thinking. Minimal brain power. The kind that involves face-planting into said baked good and giving zilch consideration to other matters going on in the world. Baking is satisfying and straightforward. It’s productive. You’re guaranteed to get a pretty darn good end result (should we tack on a ‘most of the time here’?). You can see (and sneakily taste) the progress. Quite unlike some other aspects of life…I wonder what they could be? Revision-time requires the simple things in life. For when your brain resembles scrambled eggs, a muddle of words and numbers. It requires homely things. And yup you guessed it, this is a homely cake. It’s neither fancy nor fussy to prepare. What are you doing this mother’s day? Are you a cynic who slanders the mere thought of yet another commercialised holiday? Soppy cards, posh lunch deals, spa breaks, the lot. Do you quietly moan, yet celebrate it anyway in a more subtle manner? A bunch of fresh flowers or breakfast in bed. Or, do you wholeheartedly embrace the opportunity to celebrate? Flowers, cards, breakfast, lunch and a spa break to boot. I’m always torn when it comes to such events. Is it rude to ignore them? It is it an overt display of consumerism to embrace them? In the end I usually decide that ‘celebration’ is justified a) if the card is homemade (and by you, not from that funky store down the road) and b) if it involves good food (again, homemade is preferable). Vegan Carrot Walnut Cookies

My last foray into baking vegan cookies was met by the comment “they taste vegan”. Well, duh. Yet the inflection suggested that by making them vegan, I was committing a crime against cookies. According to this ‘higher power’ vegan is the witchiepoo of the baking realm. It was clear that any future sorties with vegan baking would be met with significant apprehension and – most probably – displeasure.  That’s a pretty negative and narrow perspective don’t you think? I must admit the cookies in question were quite horrid – I only ate them in a stubborn attempt to pretend that my cooking surely couldn’t produce anything that bad. I should have swallowed my pride and saved my taste buds from some unnecessary torture. Despite that first abortive attempt at vegan baking, I remained unperturbed. Just because one recipe was a shocker, didn’t mean that they all would be. Right? And they couldn’t be any more horrid than cookies that tasted like concrete. Well, I sincerely hoped not.
