    • The Humble Chook. Nature’s Nutrient Exchange Machine.

Who knew there was such a thing as a chook auction? Apparently there is, or at least in small town Australia – the couple I’m currently staying with went to one last Saturday morning. After an unfortunate run in between their last brood and their Irish Terrier, the chook pen was pining for some new feathered residents. Apparently the auction was quite the place to be (though that’s not saying much for a town of this size). A hullaballoo of people eagerly (and quite aggressively at times, so I hear) bidding for their new egg-laying-machines. S and B came home with five almost mature Hyline chickens pleased with their purchase, despite having only gone in with the intention of acquiring three. That’s always the case with shopping isn’t it? Each bird was $24 a pop. Was that expensive? I honestly don’t know. How much would one expect to pay for a bog-standard-yet-efficient-egg-laying-chook  to cost? What price would you be prepared to pay? Continue reading →

      Apple Sultana Loaf

This Apple Sultana Loaf was not intended to embody the Taste Without Waste philosophy in a literal sense. Oh no. It had rather been assigned to the other major position of relatively-healthy-but-still-super-tasty recipe. After an unexpected turn of events it’s now also taken on the role of recipe-that-can-use-up-ingredients-that-really-shouldn’t-be-used. Taste Without Waste on two fronts…we’re doing well today aren’t we? How did we happen upon this double whammy? For the past week I’ve been staying at a family friends house and one afternoon decided to bake this loaf. After rummaging through their dried fruit stores I could not see no hide nor hair of sultanas. There was however two packets of mixed dried fruit. Why, I could just pick the sultanas out! Problem solved. Better than making a trip down to the supermarket and back, right? Hmmm. After opening the first packet (which had already been opened at some point) I wasn’t so sure. The stuff was practically fossilised. Dry and crystallized to say the least. The best before date? November 2010. Continue reading →

      Vegetable Fritters

I’ll forgive you for jumping to the conclusion that these are vegetable fritters and therefore they must be boring. I’ve come across some simply dreadful creations in the past. Stodgy, rubbery, bland, mushy. No thank you. These fellows are different. Sure, sure there’s still the bog-standard carrot/zucchini combination. Can’t help that – they grate up a treat and there’s almost always a few floating around the refrigerator. But then things start to get a little more funky. A bland vegetable fritter is the pits. It puts vegetarian cooking to shame. We’re going to spice ‘em up with ground cumin, paprika and fennel seeds. We’re going to bypass dreary old plain flour. Exchange it for something with more excitement factor. Something more nutritious. And that, ladies and gents, is besan flour. Continue reading →

    • Overeating in the Name of Preventing Waste

How many times have you sat down to a wonderful meal and thoroughly enjoyed eating it? Plenty I hope. BUT. Yes, of course there’s a but. Have you occasionally – or more than occasionally– left the table clutching your stomach (and trying to hide the fact that you’ve undone the top button of your jeans), genuinely surprised that you can still fit through the door? Not very pleasant, is it? Ruins a perfectly good meal. Unfortunately there is such a thing as eating too much good food. Sad, but true. Splurging from time to time is human – those stuff-your-face-with-anything-carbs/salt/sugar/fat/anything days are a fact of life. We won’t include them here. When the overeating goes rampant on a more ‘local’ basis, say over a luxurious dessert, and results in a horrible, bloated six month’s pregnant belly (anyone else own a pair of fat pants solely for this situation?) it’s not so amusing. Vegetarian Sheperd’s Pie

Confession time. Any vegetarian scorners avert your eyes. Though if you’re that way inclined and reading a vegetarian blog I’m a tad confused. Annnyyyway…here goes. There actually are some meat dishes that I miss. That I crave from time to time. Shock. Horror. However it’s not so much the actual meatiness, but usually either the grease (gross, right?) or the memories attached to them. Sometimes both. In this case (and thankfully so) it was the latter that I was pining for.  A meaty memory. On cold wintery days, I would rush home from primary school, often sopping wet (apparently a 10 minute walk is not far enough to warrant a lift home, even on stormy days. Thanks mum and dad.) hoping with all my heart that Sheperd’s pie would be on the menu for tea. I was a sucker for all things potato – still am, though to a far lesser extent – and digging into a bowl of creamy, cheesy mash piled above a rich, hearty, and yes meaty, filling (drenched in tomato ketchup of course – what else do you expect from a ten year old?) was bliss on a grey day.  Continue reading →
