IMG_0395To celebrate our final week in Sydney early one morning my sister and I headed down to Circular Quay. We had a beautiful breakfast perched on a rolling lawn in the botanic gardens, overlooking the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House. And we weren’t plagued with guilt regarding how much we’d spent on breakfast. If you find yourself a tad peckish down at Circular Quay you’re looking at around $7 for a muffin. A muffin. After finding ourselves trapped in this situation more times that I’d like to admit, we opted to bake our own muffins the day before and pack them along with a freshly cut fruit salad. I can assure you the breakfast was significantly healthier and tastier – not to mention cheaper – than one we would have purchased. Continue reading →

      Dark Chocolate Orange Coconut Cookies

I haven’t had much time to cook, nor felt like it (what is the world coming to?!) over the past few days. Apart from the one exception (sublime homemade spinach and ricotta gnocchi in a pine nut and browned butter sauce – I’ll make it again just for you soon, promise!) meals have largely consisted of basic salads or poached eggs on veg. Despite the general abnormal behaviour in regards to cooking, I haven’t been able to resist a little baking. In fact, before I left small-town Western Australia in June last year, baking comprised the majority of my time spent cooking. My repertoire was far simpler than it is today so it only felt ‘proper’ to revisit one of the old favourites. These Dark Chocolate Orange Coconut Cookies used to be my ‘sophisticated’ biscuits. I felt very grown up using the complex ‘adult’ flavours. Boy have things moved along a fraction mile since then. Continue reading →

      Banana Bread

*Note: I actually penned this post waaaaaayyyy back in July, however with the small matter of moving across the country I’ve neither had the time nor energy to cook/photograph/write. Fortunately this recipe actually relates to the past few days. It’s been extremely confusing returning to small town Western Australia after 18 months away and what with the jet-lag and general moving related exhaustion the only thing I particularly feel like doing is face-planting into a big slice of warm, buttered banana bread. Or the whole loaf. Continue reading →

    • Moving House.

Does anyone actually enjoy moving house? Of course it does quite depend on where you’re going, the circumstances and so on, but surely no-one likes packing. It’s a drag. Perhaps it’s my neat-freak tendencies that spoil the ‘fun’, but honestly what’s there to like about having half packed boxes lying around the house, just waiting to be tripped over? Come on, don’t say you haven’t yelled expletives at a box because it was ‘in the way’ (and not you just being a clumsy soul). Does it sound like we’re in the middle of moving house? Mmm. Buh-bye Sydney. It’s been nice knowing you for a year.

It’s very tempting to leave packing to the absolute last minute, rather than having the house looking like a mini-tornado’s hit it for any extended period. However, there’s one ‘department’ (because I’m a little anal and divide the house into sections for organisation purposes) of moving/packing etc. that can’t be ignored for too long, without some serious waste occurring. The aspect in question is food. Continue reading →

Creamy Cannellini Bean & Vegetable Pies

Who said that vegetarian food couldn’t be indulgent? It just so happens that many vegetarians choose to prepare and eat healthier options. That’s not so say there aren’t gluttonous opportunities out there. These pies are one of them. You’ve a few key staples of French cooking – wine, cream and rich, buttery pastry. With those three under your belt you really can’t go wrong, unless you decide to throw in some tripe or a pair of smelly old boots (both of which are actually quite comparable). Then you’re quite on your own.

A long, loooonnnnnng time ago these were Chicken and Vegetable Puff Pastry Parcels. Somehow along the way they’ve morphed into Creamy Cannellini Bean and Vegetable Pies. I can’t help myself. Fortunately in this case the tweaks drastic alterations have paid off. Would you believe it if I said that the vegetarian version is far more scrum-diddly-umptious than the original chicken one? And wait for it…healthier too? Now we’re really onto something – indulgent and healthy. Ish. It’s all relative, right? Continue reading →
