      Chocolate Chip Cookies

This is yet another of those recipes you could make with eyes shut. Simple, yet classic. An old favourite, regardless of how old you are. Crispy on the edges, soft, buttery and chewy in the centre and with white, dark and milk chocolate chips…what’s not to like? Chocolate chip cookies are acceptable at any time of day. Truly. The original recipe actually calls for double the amount below, however I find that provides slighhhhtly too much temptation. They’ll disappear pretty quickly, but that’s not really a bad thing is it? Better than downing half a plate in a sitting – why is it that the regret only hits after you’ve lost count? By all means make a double batch and freeze a bag or two. Just remember that you were warned, when you find yourself stealthily (or so you’d like to think) sneaking a few in the middle of the night. Chocolate Brownies

I had a Monday from hell this week. Don’t you just love those days? The kind where nothing goes you way. Or at least it very much seems like that. The kind where you feel as though you’ve got your head stuck up a dead bear’s smelly butt all day. The kind where you initially fight the doom and gloom, convinced it’ll pass in an hour or so. Positive thinking all the way! That by lunchtime you begrudgingly acknowledge that whoever is ‘up there’ has it in for you, big time. That by mid afternoon you’re wracking your brain, trying to remember what bad deed you committed to deserve this particularly nasty bout of karma. That by 7pm you’re collapsed in a heap on the floor wholeheartedly believing that nothing bad can happen if you stay there, very still and pretend you’re invisible. Then the leg cramp kicks in and you know there’s only one solution left. One way to turn the day around. Face-planting into a plate of warm fudgy Chocolate Brownies. Emotional eating? Nothing quite like it, particularly with something as indulgent as these. And heck, you’re already apparently in the sin bin so what’s a little more wickedness going to do? Continue reading →

Things have been just a little busy around here lately. Actually, that’s an understatement. It’s been downright hectic. I’m sure our situation is far from unique. Preparing food for Christmas isn’t for the fainthearted. You’ve gotta have a pretty strong constitution to get through the festive period. The will to keep going when you just.cant.de-bone.another.chicken, or roll out more fruit mince pie pastry, or ice another spice biscuit. The guts to brave the zoo that is small town supermarkets on a Sunday (pretty much the one and only time they’re open on Sunday all year) and to deftly manoeuvre your cart around the other half-crazed, half-desperate shoppers. To have enough sense of dignity to not break-down sobbing in the cheese section because 150g of goat’s cheese is close to an hours wage. And you need more than one packet. It’s a good thing Christmas only comes around once a year. Continue reading →

      Dark Chocolate Orange Coconut Cookies

I haven’t had much time to cook, nor felt like it (what is the world coming to?!) over the past few days. Apart from the one exception (sublime homemade spinach and ricotta gnocchi in a pine nut and browned butter sauce – I’ll make it again just for you soon, promise!) meals have largely consisted of basic salads or poached eggs on veg. Despite the general abnormal behaviour in regards to cooking, I haven’t been able to resist a little baking. In fact, before I left small-town Western Australia in June last year, baking comprised the majority of my time spent cooking. My repertoire was far simpler than it is today so it only felt ‘proper’ to revisit one of the old favourites. These Dark Chocolate Orange Coconut Cookies used to be my ‘sophisticated’ biscuits. I felt very grown up using the complex ‘adult’ flavours. Boy have things moved along a fraction mile since then. Continue reading →

Food has an uncanny way of making everything better. It also has the ability to make things infinitely worse – you’ve had a shocker of a day then to top it off discover that you’ve run out of a crucial ingredient just before it’s gotta go in the oven/drop the whole thing on the floor/burn your mouth on it (one of the worst.food.crimes.ever). But, this post is not about the ‘incidents’ we’d rather forget. Let me explain how one unassuming scone turned my week around.

The first half of last week was a why-does-the-man-in-the-sky-hate-me-so-much kind of week. One that you look back on and cringe at how much you overreacted/ how self-absorbed/immature/shallow you were. So what did my ‘shocker’ of a week look like? Continue reading →
