I’m currently in class being taught how to set up a travel blog for one of our assessments. Huh. Think we can check the ‘yeh-I-know-how-to-blog’ box, thank you very much! After trawling through old posts I realised that this particular number hadn’t been published yonks back – some pea-brain forgot to hit the ‘publish’ button! No more faffin’ around – here it is.

Right peeps today it’s time to get serious. Don’t look at me like that. I do mean it. We’ve got something to talk about. Something that for all we claim it isn’t, is still taboo. And no it’s not your kinky bedroom adventures. That you can keep to yourself thank you very much. Today we’re talking about mental health. Among young adults (if spoken about at all) it’ll be in hushed voices, as though it’s something that only someone else could suffer from. The other option? We joke about it. Laugh it off. I know I’m culprit to it. Something not going quite right? Send yourself up about it. Pretend it really ain’t that bad (admittedly sometimes that’s the truth – over dramatizing is not completely unfamiliar territory). Sure, this can be a way of bringing something to the surface that you may not otherwise have had the guts to, yet it also dismisses the reality of the issue, diminishes the significance. Hey, it’s actually okay to admit that life’s a touch tough at the moment – perhaps more than a touch – and to not make a joke out of it. Continue reading →

      Five Super Seeds Cookies

I discovered this gem when looking for recipes to use up leftover seeds/millet etc. when moving from Sydney back to WA late last year. The darn quarantine laws had us looking at throwing out roughly $100 of perfectly adequate nuts and the like. As if that was going to happen! It was a brilliant challenge to find various ways of using up the remaining items, and also reinforced the ethos behind tastewithoutwaste. Why, it would have been purely hypocritical to allow such food to find its way into the trash! These cookies were a particular success story, and have been made many a time over the past year, only to be gobbled up in a matter of moments. Continue reading →

Blogging has run away from me lately. So much so that I wrote this post early last week and promptly forgot to hit the publish button. Yeah, it was a face-palm moment. Aaaanyway, we got there eventually…here we go! With the semester drawing to an end and essays piling high, blogging has slipped down a rung or two on the ladder of priorities. However, with an anthropology test looming tomorrow it’s reached the point at which one tosses flash cards into the air, collapses face first into the sofa and groans in exasperation. No. More. Revision. Baking thus becomes a knight in shining armour. A welcome distraction from structuralism, witchcraft and fraternal polyandry. It’s that productive type of procrastination – in the same league as obsessive cleaning or manic gardening. But wait, there’s more. Just to better it’s fellow contestants, flying past in the sprint to ‘number one’ procrastination, baking produces the ultimate reward. That’s right, an edible one. Continue reading →

      Chocolate Chip Cookies

This is yet another of those recipes you could make with eyes shut. Simple, yet classic. An old favourite, regardless of how old you are. Crispy on the edges, soft, buttery and chewy in the centre and with white, dark and milk chocolate chips…what’s not to like? Chocolate chip cookies are acceptable at any time of day. Truly. The original recipe actually calls for double the amount below, however I find that provides slighhhhtly too much temptation. They’ll disappear pretty quickly, but that’s not really a bad thing is it? Better than downing half a plate in a sitting – why is it that the regret only hits after you’ve lost count? By all means make a double batch and freeze a bag or two. Just remember that you were warned, when you find yourself stealthily (or so you’d like to think) sneaking a few in the middle of the night. Chewy Oatmeal Raisin Cookies

I am a terrible, terrible person. You must think I’m unable to keep my word. There may be some truth in that. It’s been over five weeks since I last posted. Five weeks. Sad thing is, I’ve had plenty of ‘back ups’ sitting here, patiently waiting to be used. There’s no excuses to be had. Later this week I’ll delve more into what has been going on, perhaps even try to justify my severe lack of commitment. On second thoughts, don’t hold me to it. Last weekend I knocked together a batch of Oatmeal Raisin Cookies for our residential college’s ‘celebration’ of Earth Hour. Truth be told they weren’t these ones – golly, not only do I go back on my word, I’m hypocritical too. This ain’t putting me in a very good light is it? However, a girl can only work with the ingredients she’s got on hand. Butter wasn’t one of them. Let’s not get too side-tracked though – these are significantly tastier and as stated below (yes it is one of those ‘pre-written ones’) you really do need to go make some. If you can trust me on anything at the moment, it’s that. In the meantime, I’ll get down to preparing a more substantial post for you! Continue reading →
