I’m currently in class being taught how to set up a travel blog for one of our assessments. Huh. Think we can check the ‘yeh-I-know-how-to-blog’ box, thank you very much! After trawling through old posts I realised that this particular number hadn’t been published yonks back – some pea-brain forgot to hit the ‘publish’ button! No more faffin’ around – here it is.

Right peeps today it’s time to get serious. Don’t look at me like that. I do mean it. We’ve got something to talk about. Something that for all we claim it isn’t, is still taboo. And no it’s not your kinky bedroom adventures. That you can keep to yourself thank you very much. Today we’re talking about mental health. Among young adults (if spoken about at all) it’ll be in hushed voices, as though it’s something that only someone else could suffer from. The other option? We joke about it. Laugh it off. I know I’m culprit to it. Something not going quite right? Send yourself up about it. Pretend it really ain’t that bad (admittedly sometimes that’s the truth – over dramatizing is not completely unfamiliar territory). Sure, this can be a way of bringing something to the surface that you may not otherwise have had the guts to, yet it also dismisses the reality of the issue, diminishes the significance. Hey, it’s actually okay to admit that life’s a touch tough at the moment – perhaps more than a touch – and to not make a joke out of it. Continue reading →

Yo Dad, it’s your birthday. Just in case you’ve forgotten (because old age does that), you’re sixty today. Jeez that’s not exactly spring-chicken material any more, is it? Not to matter, although you may be more akin to an older, scragglier rooster than a cute, fluffy chick you are wise. And wise is good. One day I hope to be as sagacious as you. To know that the best kind of birthday involves eschewing all forms of modern life and retreating to the wilds of Tassie for a five-night hike. To party it up with the drop-bears and slithery snakes rather than people. I mean, who want’s a nagging elder daughter telling you regularly that you are officially eligible for a seniors card? You know you love me, deep down there somewhere. But in all honesty, Happy Birthday. You’ve proven over the years that age really don’t mean a thang. That your bones may get a little older, a little creakier, the muscles a little tighter, but that doesn’t stop you, no way. You’ve also taught me how to make a bangin’ batch of ‘Bushwalker Biscuits’. One of the many important things in life. Continue reading →

With the summer break stretching out ahead, there’s been plenty of time spent sitting at home looking at recipes. Poring over the numerous cookbooks that our share house has accumulated, collecting more cookbooks from the local library, stalking food blogs…it’s an addiction. An unhealthy one? I’ll leave that up to you. Rather than doing the more important things in life, such as washing that dress with the spilled Moscato on it from back in October (dear god, was it really October?! What a grot) a certain someone has spent a lot of time looking at recipes. It’s easy to become lethargic, to simply sit there and consider all the things one could be cooking. The other variance is to actually get off one’s butt and cook ‘all the things’, yet remain steadfastly disinclined to blog about them. Things are going to change. Honestly. Continue reading →

I have very fond memories of sitting on my aunt’s kitchen bench at the age of four or five, anticipating the moment at which I would be allowed to make the thumb print that gives these biscuits their name. I felt so grown-up being allowed to ‘cook’ and it was always an exciting and satisfying day out.  My hands are pretty small even now, so back then my thumbs would have been tiny. I have never asked my aunt…perhaps I fear the answer will burst my childhood pride…but it is likely that she went along and make larger indentations once I was distracted with something else. Otherwise there would have been very little jam in the biscuits! It just goes to show that the size of the indentation can vary significantly depending on the size of your thumb. There’s no need to take the name literally – use any finger you like, or make a double indentation like I do, depending on how much jam you want. Continue reading →
