With the summer break stretching out ahead, there’s been plenty of time spent sitting at home looking at recipes. Poring over the numerous cookbooks that our share house has accumulated, collecting more cookbooks from the local library, stalking food blogs…it’s an addiction. An unhealthy one? I’ll leave that up to you. Rather than doing the more important things in life, such as washing that dress with the spilled Moscato on it from back in October (dear god, was it really October?! What a grot) a certain someone has spent a lot of time looking at recipes. It’s easy to become lethargic, to simply sit there and consider all the things one could be cooking. The other variance is to actually get off one’s butt and cook ‘all the things’, yet remain steadfastly disinclined to blog about them. Things are going to change. Honestly. Continue reading →

Why is it that birthdays are always the event that causes one to stop and take stock of life? To put one in a contemplative mood, a reflective headspace. Today I reached the big two-oh mark. Two decades. If that’s not damn scary then I don’t know what is. Maybe you don’t freak out on birthdays. You simply acknowledge them and go on your merry way. Some people, however, aren’t quite so calm and collected – you’re looking at the girl who had a breakdown the day she turned sixteen after listening to Taylor Swift’s ‘Fifteen’ and realising she would never be fifteen again. Gosh, that’s not one, but two confessions I’d like to retract…birthdays also tend to prompt some people (I wonder who that could be?) to become brutally honest. But before such musings spill out in what is likely to be a serious case of word vomit, we need to acknowledge something important. That cannot be ignored. What’s that? Birthday’s need cake. And if not cake, then cupcakes. You see, it aint a birthday if there’s not some sort of sweet indulgence to be had. Unless you’re one of those people – choosing savoury over sweet? Humph. Fathers day. An event rarely given much consideration, let alone celebrated, in our household. Why? Dad passionately abhors the materialism and commericalisation that it embodies. Not to mention that he feels that we should treat everyday like fathers day. Tough luck mister. In primary school we would always buy a trinket from the ‘gift stall’ – a mug filled with sweets, or handkerchiefs or socks.  Seriously, do the schools source those items from? Every year the gifts are practically identical. Each kid proudly goes home thinking they have bought dad a unique gift, failing to cotton onto the fact that every other classmate has done the very same thing with virtually the same item. Mum used to have to tell my sister to buy a mug and me to buy a hankie so that we didn’t do just that. With that in mind I actually can sympathise with dad’s misgivings, to an extent. The gifts aren’t what fathers day should be about. I mean, he drives me bonkers a fair bit of the time and I could list twenty traits right now that make me want to go stick my head in the oven, but all in all he’s an alright bloke. That’s an understatement. He’s a bloody brilliant dad. So, yesterday I attempted to walk the fine line between saying thanks for everything and ignoring the event altogether, like we usually do. In order to do that I turned to what I know best. Food. Continue reading →
