      Meringues & A Chocolate Twist

Post 100. Gee Whizz. Are we there already? Appears so. I’m not going to ramble on about what a journey it’s been, what I’ve learned, the mishaps had long the way, blah, blah, blah – that can wait for 200. I am however going to introduce you to a recipe that I believe encapsulates the philosophy of Taste Without Waste. Corny, you say? Isn’t that a requirement of ‘birthdays’ or ‘milestones’? Since discovering that today would be the big one-oh-oh (which was, by the way, on Friday – sadly demonstrating how not switched on I am at the moment. We’ll blame the summer weather.) I’ve thought long and hard about which recipe to share. Agonised over it. Something I do well. Apple pie? Maple granola? Throw back to an old recipe? If so, which one? Nothing felt quite right. It had to be perfect (yet another unappealing personality trait, jeez this ain’t exactly revealing my good side is it?).

But wait a moment, isn’t food waste an important factor in all this? Well, yuh. Best place to look for authentic inspiration? The fridge. And whaddya know, there were two forlorn egg whites sitting there on the top shelf. Bingo. I keep telling myself I’ll compile a list of ways to use left over egg whites/yolks. We’ll get there someday. For now we’ll settle with one solution. Yep, you guessed it. Meringues. Continue reading →

I had a Monday from hell this week. Don’t you just love those days? The kind where nothing goes you way. Or at least it very much seems like that. The kind where you feel as though you’ve got your head stuck up a dead bear’s smelly butt all day. The kind where you initially fight the doom and gloom, convinced it’ll pass in an hour or so. Positive thinking all the way! That by lunchtime you begrudgingly acknowledge that whoever is ‘up there’ has it in for you, big time. That by mid afternoon you’re wracking your brain, trying to remember what bad deed you committed to deserve this particularly nasty bout of karma. That by 7pm you’re collapsed in a heap on the floor wholeheartedly believing that nothing bad can happen if you stay there, very still and pretend you’re invisible. Then the leg cramp kicks in and you know there’s only one solution left. One way to turn the day around. Face-planting into a plate of warm fudgy Chocolate Brownies. Emotional eating? Nothing quite like it, particularly with something as indulgent as these. And heck, you’re already apparently in the sin bin so what’s a little more wickedness going to do? Continue reading →

Things have been just a little busy around here lately. Actually, that’s an understatement. It’s been downright hectic. I’m sure our situation is far from unique. Preparing food for Christmas isn’t for the fainthearted. You’ve gotta have a pretty strong constitution to get through the festive period. The will to keep going when you just.cant.de-bone.another.chicken, or roll out more fruit mince pie pastry, or ice another spice biscuit. The guts to brave the zoo that is small town supermarkets on a Sunday (pretty much the one and only time they’re open on Sunday all year) and to deftly manoeuvre your cart around the other half-crazed, half-desperate shoppers. To have enough sense of dignity to not break-down sobbing in the cheese section because 150g of goat’s cheese is close to an hours wage. And you need more than one packet. It’s a good thing Christmas only comes around once a year. Continue reading →

Please note: this is not a healthy recipe. Nor is it intended to be. Remember the adage everything in moderation? It applies here. For example, I haven’t made this pudding in over a year. That’s pretty good self-restraint. Until you take into account the various brownies and cookies and cheesecakes and so on. But that’s beside the point isn’t it? Isn’t it? This recipe is from the second cookbook I ever owned The Australian Women’s Weekly’s ‘Get Real: Make a Meal’. I loved that cookbook (and sadly still do), thinking I was a right groovy gal to have one with a title like that. In an act of revenge (don’t ask me what I did to initiate it, I haven’t a clue) my sister scribbled all over the front of it. I was horrified. How dare she desecrate my cookbook? Never mind that the recipes remained untouched. It was a cookbook. And it was mine. It seems that I was far too protective of my cookbooks, even at the age of eight.  Oh boy, that’s sad isn’t it? Sometimes things in the kitchen don’t quite turn out as intended. You start with a seemingly credible recipe, measure your ingredients meticulously, pop the mix in the oven and wait patiently  with your fingers and toes crossed.  Surely it will turn out right after all that. Yet, inexplicably, you draw from the oven an item that barely resembles the image on your recipe. “Oh god, is it even edible?” is the first thought that runs through your head. I like to call situations like this ‘divine intervention’, rather than admit that somewhere along the lines I messed up spectacularly. Take Wednesday for example – I followed a new recipe to the tee (an unusual occurrence), confident that in doing so nothing could possibly go wrong. However that faith meant thatI failed to see the warning signs going off in the background. I frowned at the cupcake batter in my bowl and tried to fathom just how I was going to pour it into the muffin tin when it resembled cookie dough. Despite thinking “Huh, I’ve never made cupcakes like this before” and my gut suggesting something was wrong, I ploughed on, resorting to squishing the mixture into the liners with my hands. I’m sure you can picture the result. Continue reading →
