      Millet & Quinoa Balls

Splurged on sweets/fatty foods over the weekend? In need of a health kick? Something to ‘reset’ your batteries? Look no further than these Millet and Quinoa Balls. There’s not a bad bone in them. These saint-like morsels contain a triple threat of protein with not one but two ancient grains in the form of quinoa and millet, as well as yellow moong dahl (substitute with yellow split peas if necessary). There’s shiitake mushrooms, pumpkin and zucchini to cover your veggie bases, and barely a drop of oil/butter to speak of. Throw in an assortment of therapeutic herbs and spices for good measure, and you’ve got a groovy thing going on. Healthy and exploding with flavour? Oh my. We mustn’t forget the arame. ‘What on earth’s arame?’ you may ask. Good question. Arame is a Japanese sea vegetable (a.k.a seaweed) that is exceptionally high in calcium, iron and iodine, with easily digestible proteins. It looks like spindly black spider legs, however it’s far from harmful. Quite the opposite in fact. I promise.   Continue reading →

      Sasha’s Ultimate Lasagne

Okay, I’ve gotta put it out there. This isn’t the best lasagne ever made, well not by my book. I mean it’s damn tasty but not the one and only. Don’t let my sister hear that though. I’d be labelled a traitor. Blasphemous. Insane. You see, this lasagne is her ‘meal to eat before I die’. It’s cheesy, it’s tomatoey and it has four, yes four, layers of pasta. Her kind of heaven. And no matter what I cook, nothing quite lives up to it. It’s become common for me to ask “what did you think of….?” and for her to reply “well, it was alright but not as good as lasagne”. Attempting to create something that surpasses the ‘holy’ lasagne is daft. It just won’t happen. Despite her slender frame, I’m almost positive that my lil sis is a true reincarnation of Garfield. You can virtually hear her purr after downing a slab of lasagne. Continue reading →

    • Vegetarian Taquitos

I’m kind of surprised that these taquitos didn’t end up a complete dog’s breakfast. You see, yesterday my brain took a holiday from cooking mode. A rare occasion, I’m telling you. Gawd, most of my dreams are about food and nightmares involve someone stealing my baking equipment. Lame, I know. So weirdness aside, without my permission my brain decided to take leave of all basic cooking instincts. First, I spattered chunks of frozen berry all over myself when making a smoothie for breakfast. Who knew that you needed liquid to puree hard ingredients in a hand blender? Well I actually did know that. Unfortunately my wits were on sabbatical. I guess it did serve as good but messy reminder. Secondly, I almost killed off the yeast in my Chelsea Buns. Someone thought it would be a good idea to reduce electricity usage and prove the dough in the sun, rather than in a very low oven. That someone then became so absorbed in her university research that she failed to see that the sun had moved and the dough was sitting in the shade. Thirty minutes later that same someone emerged from the computer screen to discover that the dough had not risen and was quite, quite cold. Cue cursing. Luckily the yeast valiantly decided to hold in there and the dough proved fine once I reverted back to the more ‘conventional’ method. The buns were slightly heavier than usual but still super tasty, which was a relief. After that episode I was rather apprehensive about cooking dinner – who knew what stupid thing I would do next?
