      Spiced Lentil & Vegetable Soup

Today my friend I’m going to share with you the fondness I have for a very special food group (yes it’s special enough to have it’s very own group of homies). That of the humble soup. The poor soup is so often underrated. Rudely relegated to the position of ‘starter’ or ‘diet food’. It may pass the test for acceptable lunch options, yet rarely makes it to the prime position of the day – the main meal (although I firmly believe that breakfast is the king of meals, yet that discussion is for another day otherwise we’ll be here for houuuuurrrrrs). I’m calling for a revolt. Are you with me? To put the wonder that is soup in its deserved place. Where it is appreciated for its diversity, its relative nutritional properties and its applicability to every season. Soup is not solely a winter meal. Why, ’tis a bowl of goodness to be savored year-round. Continue reading →

I have a little sister. You might of heard of her before around here. How we pined after cookies that were out of our small-child reach. How we dealt calmly with the cockroach incident. I call her little. But it’s becoming a far stretch to do so. You see, she’s ever so slender but really not so little – a graceful gazelle that stands taller than moi, the aardvark. Pure habit I guess. Or a way of convincing myself that because she is little I shall always know best. What a strong inference. Perhaps I just call her ‘little sister’ out of fondness. I mean she’s sexy as all get out, but if I went around talking about my ‘sexy sister’ people would shoot me strange looks and subtly scuttle away sideways, until they could turn around and run, run, run awaaaaaay. Now if you asked me to give an impromptu speel on fair trade v free trade/third world debt/the transatlantic slave trade/BRICS/the scramble for Africa you’d receive a a well put together, mostly coherent piece. At least we’d hope so, considering that’s what I’ve been studying all day. But if we were to discuss food? It’d be a pretty poor effort on my part. Unusual indeed. You see, I talk about food a lot. If you’re having a conversation with me, food will come into it at some-point. Guaranteed. Today? I’ll eat it yes, but discuss it? No. I’d rather be spending that time eating some more (study munchies, anyone?). Therefore, in lieu of Monday’s post we’re taking another trip back through the ‘not-so-good’ archives with this ‘gem’ from August last year. Since then my aptitude for using food processors has improved significantly – and one would hope that the photography (and writing for that matter) skills have followed suit! Continue reading →

      Sasha’s Ultimate Lasagne

Okay, I’ve gotta put it out there. This isn’t the best lasagne ever made, well not by my book. I mean it’s damn tasty but not the one and only. Don’t let my sister hear that though. I’d be labelled a traitor. Blasphemous. Insane. You see, this lasagne is her ‘meal to eat before I die’. It’s cheesy, it’s tomatoey and it has four, yes four, layers of pasta. Her kind of heaven. And no matter what I cook, nothing quite lives up to it. It’s become common for me to ask “what did you think of….?” and for her to reply “well, it was alright but not as good as lasagne”. Attempting to create something that surpasses the ‘holy’ lasagne is daft. It just won’t happen. Despite her slender frame, I’m almost positive that my lil sis is a true reincarnation of Garfield. You can virtually hear her purr after downing a slab of lasagne. Continue reading →

Soup, soup, soup. Perhaps one of the greatest food inventions ever in my book. It removes the chill from one’s bones on cold wintery days and is wondrous at replenishing depleted energy stores. Feeling lethargic? A bowl of piping hot, peppery soup is sure to add a spring to your step. It is relatively difficult to go wrong with soup – chuck in a few vegies, some protein if you wish and a whole heap of veggie stock and leave it bubbling away on the stove whilst you read, blob in front of the telly (or like me do the housework, a far less interesting option). Blended soups perhaps give you even more leeway for ‘slight mishaps’ as everything is pureed to within an inch of it’s life at the end, so it really doesn’t matter if you overcook it/don’t cut everything precisely!
