      Quick Chickpea & Mushroom Curry

Now folks, here’s my top tip going into 2016. Don’t go buy yourself a new laptop. No matter how old your current one is, cling on to it for dear life. Give it CPR if you must. Why? Because it will prove to be two of the most painful days of your recent existence. More painful than the half marathon. And far less rewarding. Well, if you’re moi anyway. Perhaps you’ve got a little leprechaun dancing around showering you with luck. Perhaps banks and Macbook Pros actually like you. And don’t find pleasure in trying to a) humiliate, b) inconvenience/time waste or c) completely and utterly zap any sort of hope from you. Right at this moment it’s 10.18pm (yay for typing out posts that you actually handwrote!) and I’m curled up in bed feeling like, well, poo. Sorry, there’s no other way to put it. Continue reading →

We all get the munchies. It’s a fact of life. Those of you who manage to go from breakfast through to lunch without a morsel of food clearly aint human. Most of us mere mortals rely on some form of sustenance to get us through the long, arduous stretch between the ‘big three’. It’s always tempting to reach for something a little sweet, a little salty. Something you can pick at – it feels as though you’re eating more – until you look perplexedly at the now non-existent pile wondering where they’d walked off to. Did the cat perchance eat them? Snacks that are nutritious in nature are a plus, though you may be doubtful as to whether a sweet, salty and nutritious snack in fact exists. Well my friends, it does indeedy. Continue reading →

Being the obsessively organised creature that I am, I had pencilled in ‘write blog post, or else’ into my diary for Monday evening. I.e. right now. What I hadn’t factored into this planning was roasting my finger-tips until very ‘well done’ indeed at work just hours ago. Ouch. Consequently said fingers make little mighty loud squeals of protest each time they hit the keyboard. The ‘or else’ was looming. Fortunately I still have a stash of pre-typed posts up my sleeve…this Apple Pecan Flaxseed Loaf is one of them. Go forth and read if you fancy. Meanwhile these fried finger-tips are on a mission to seek relief in something icy. Continue reading →

Now if you asked me to give an impromptu speel on fair trade v free trade/third world debt/the transatlantic slave trade/BRICS/the scramble for Africa you’d receive a a well put together, mostly coherent piece. At least we’d hope so, considering that’s what I’ve been studying all day. But if we were to discuss food? It’d be a pretty poor effort on my part. Unusual indeed. You see, I talk about food a lot. If you’re having a conversation with me, food will come into it at some-point. Guaranteed. Today? I’ll eat it yes, but discuss it? No. I’d rather be spending that time eating some more (study munchies, anyone?). Therefore, in lieu of Monday’s post we’re taking another trip back through the ‘not-so-good’ archives with this ‘gem’ from August last year. Since then my aptitude for using food processors has improved significantly – and one would hope that the photography (and writing for that matter) skills have followed suit! Continue reading →

It was never my intention to post this recipe. I was making baked samosas for dinner – so much healthier than the traditional deep-fried ones and just as tasty – and felt that the meal was lacking in protein. I could have substituted some of the potato with mashed chickpeas/lentils, but didn’t want to alter the recipe too much. I’m always disinclined to do that on more ‘particular’ first-time recipes. Additionally, I would run the risk of being berated for ‘lying’ about making samosas for tea as they would no longer be samosas in a certain persons eyes. Feeling particularly lazy (and before you judge, rolling out and filling samosas isn’t exactly a walk in the park) I wanted something that would cook while the samosas were in the oven. Roasted chickpeas? Bingo. I’ve made these spiced chickpeas before, but despite seeing a number of recipes floating around the net, I’ve never tried roasting them. Silly me. I didn’t know what I’d been missing out on. I warn you now, roasted chickpeas are addictive. And very, very moreish. Forget crisps, wedges and pretzels, these are the snack that all the cool kids are eating. High in protein, low in salt and fat. Big on flavour. Talk about taste without waste! Continue reading →
