      Spinach & Ricotta Gnocchi

Today’s million dollar question: how many types of gnocchi are there? What’s that? Speak a little louder. Oh, just the potato one? Hmm not quite right. Turns out there’s three. You’ve got Gnocchi Romaine (made from semolina), Gnocchi Parisienne (made from choux pastry) and the aforementioned ‘potato one’ – Gnocchi Piedmontaise. I’ve made the former and latter and could ramble on for a while about the various ins and outs of each one, but a) that would probably send you to sleepy land and b) I want to talk about something else. That something else being this Spinach and Ricotta Gnocchi. I know what you’re going to ask. Please don’t. I haven’t the faintest clue what ‘category’ it fits into. Does the ‘yummy type’ count? Squirrel’s Quiche

This quiche is a family staple, ‘borrowed’ from Squirrel’s Restaurant in the 1980’s. Hence the odd name. There’s certainly no squirrels in it. As of this year it’s a new improved family staple. You see, sometimes tradition requires alteration. Some tweaking here and there. To produce a real winner of a dish. That’s not to say the essence of the quiche has been modified, oh no. That’s been carefully preserved (I would have faced the wrath of certain family members had it not). With the application of a few key culinary techniques (blind baking, anyone?) this quiche has been transformed from decent nosh to a top notch feed. A smooth, light custard is dotted with florets of nutrient packed broccoli, sweet leeks and butternut squash and topped with golden cheddar. The whole thing is encased in a crisp, crumbly whole-wheat crust. A pastry to knock your socks off. The crowning jewel of the Squirrel’s Quiche 2.0 revamp. Continue reading →

    • Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff

happy-mdThis ‘rambling’ post was penned a month or two ago when I was still living in Sydney. However, the content is still relevant, even that pertaining to the dog (yep there’s a dog in it). Just sub the dog for one cat with severe anxiety issues who likes to meow and scratch at my window in the dead of the night. Repeatedly. It seems I’m being stalked by animals with slightly whacked personalities….

Don’t sweat the small stuff. Not always a welcome comment, but true nonetheless One of the biggest sources of stress for me has been things out of my control. Events or circumstances that I can’t do anything about. After years of angst I have finally (or at least for the most part) learned that there is absolutely no point wasting time wishing you could change something that you clearly can’t. Tonight is a very good example of that. It’s some godforsaken hour and our neighbors yappy dog has decided to begin its very long and arduous opera recital. For the hundredth time in the past month. Almond Butter

Consider yourself lucky that I haven’t yet alerted you to my severe obsession with peanut butter. The time will come and when it does, brace yourself or tune out. A year ago, with the advice of a naturopath in mind, I started to cut back on the stuff. Going cold turkey was simply too daunting yet soon enough I became transfixed with other, healthier nut butters. And oh boy, there’s a whole world of them out there.  Rich, creamy and dreamily nutty. An obvious statement, but I felt it was necessary. Sorry. It’s heaven on a stick. Or more specifically, on toast or crispbread or sliced apple or banana or swirled through natural yoghurt or straight out of the jar…we could be here for a while. Freshly made nut butter? That takes things to a whole new level. And guess what? Today’s your lucky day. We’re going to be doing just that. One glorious jar of almond butter coming up. Continue reading →

First recipe post for 2013 2014! We’ll get there with the date change. It usually clicks in around March. Anywho, how are those goals (we’re not calling them resolutions, remember) going? Wavering on any yet? I surely hope not. Just when you thought you were done with all that New Year philosophical rah-rah, here’s a few more lifestyle changes to consider. With the help of these Apple Pecan Cinnamon Rolls of course. If you’ve already got the following ‘ideals’ down pat, good for you. We’ll let you keep that smug grin. For the moment, anyway. Give it a few hours and it’ll be replaced with one of blissed out happiness. Light and fluffy with a sweet, nutty filling. Drizzled with an oozy, sticky maple topping. Don’t say I didn’t warn you about the side effects. What exactly are you going to learn from these Apple Pecan Cinnamon Rolls, apart from that they’re addictive with a capital A?  Let’s get started on those tasty life lessons. Continue reading →
