Rosemary, Roast Capsicum & Seed Dip

Last night I waged war with a fit ball. I’m disinclined to say I lost. For it’s not over yet. We’ll do battle again shortly. Being ever so thoughtful, the little sis sent over her spare fit ball for me to use (I think she’s somewhat excited I’m finally actually and seriously dedicating a significant amount of time to ‘getting flexible’). It was deflated and all ready to be pumped up with the pump that she sent in the second package (because, well it may have been forgotten the first time round). The excitement built as I waited for that second package to arrive. The fit ball was there sitting on the middle of my floor, ready to be restored to it’s former, bouncy and inflated glory. I sat down on the couch and looked at it. How best to tackle the task ahead? Just get in and do it I guess. So I pumped, and pumped and pumped. After what felt like simply hours of working at a teeny, flimsy pump the ball began to slowly take shape. To rise out of it’s crumpled state. As we neared the perfect spherical shape that it should be we hit a major hurdle. I pulled at the pump to remove the needle and stopper the valve with the little stopper fandangle provided. Nothing happened. I pulled again. This time the pump did budge, and so quickly that it nearly knocked me out, however the needle was left behind. Clearly they were no longer friends. It had been too arduous an affair for the both of them to stay together. No amount of prying or pulling could remove the darn little thing from the valve, which by the way appeared to have magically shrunk during the inflating of the ball. Slowly but surely the fit ball began to deflate with a quiet hiss. It didn’t like being pumped up, no thank you. Muttering and cursing under the breath failed to persuade the ball to release the needle. In a fit of rage I fled to the shower, hoping things would be magically fixed upon my return. Not the case. The fit ball looked at me from it’s perch on the couch like a sad, saggy old man’s belly, slowly sinking towards the ground. Damn you fitball. Continue reading →

It’s Sunday night. You can be of two minds right now. Apprehensive about the week ahead and the many tasks it entails. Or as pleased as the cat that got the cream with the weekend that’s been. It’s your choice. You may even be lucky enough to have a wondiferous week ahead and be feeling just plain good about everything. Sunday nights can fulfil many purposes, however they are not for wallowing. If you’re anxious about the coming week, or forlornly pondering why it has to be that the weekend is over, pick something good that’s happened in the last two days and use it to perk your up your last few hours until that Monday morning menace of an alarm goes off. So what’s it going to be? This Choco-Banana Smoothie is mine. Continue reading →

      Porotos Granados

Porotos Granados. Is it a soup? Is it a stew? No-one will ever know. This version of the Spanish dish is confused but happy. Like me a lot of the time. I guess you could call it a chunky soup. Not that it particularly matters. Why do we always feel as though we have to define everything? What if you don’t want to be the ‘girl next door’ or the ‘crazy bitch’ or the ‘cute geek’? This dish could be feeling the exact same thing. It doesn’t want to be pinned down by labels, nuh-uh! It’s its own individual self. Quirks and all. It’s sweet from the butternut squash and corn, slightly spicy from the smoked paprika, creamy from the sweet potato and borlotti beans and just damn delectable with the addition of oregano and caraway seeds. And Asparagus is in season, big yay! Sure, you’re always going to face the conundrum of whether to eat it with a spoon or a fork, but if that’s the biggest issue you face for the day I think you can handle it. Why, try both! No, not one in each hand…ah you know what I mean. Continue reading →

It’s a glorious summer day, the sunshine warming one’s back and adding a spring to the step. The kind of day where you’d be daft to not pack up a picnic and trot off to the closest park/beach/nature reserve. Have work? No issue, throw down a picnic rug in the backyard when you get home and make dinner a picnic affair. If you live anywhere like Melbourne, the climate is darn unpredictable – hot one day, stormy the next and grey drizzle the following. So embrace the glorious weather while it’s there! A staple of any decent picnic is bread. Yes, there’s couscous, quiche, pasta salad and other starch/carbohydrate based meals galore – all brilliant in their own right – but it’s nigh on impossible to beat a freshly baked loaf of bread. It needn’t be of your own making, especially if you’re pressed for time, and even if you do have the minutes up your sleeve it needn’t be fancy or tear-your-hair-out difficult. Welcome to the world of soda bread! Continue reading →

      Simple No-churn Coffee Ice-cream

I recently ventured back to ze old hometown that is Albany for a whirlwind stay. Among other things my dear father tried to fatten me up like a pig for slaughter with humongous servings of ice-cream each evening. Due to his cholesterol levels he can no longer eat it, so it was ‘my daughterly duty’ to consume all that was left in his freezer before departing. One evening I queried as to whether he had yet tried my blindingly easy coffee ice-cream. ‘No?’ he responded with a puzzled expression. Turns out I’d never posted the recipe! From last summer. Oh dear. So here we go Dad, I know you’re not meant to eat ice-cream any more, but if you’re going to break the rules this is where you should do it! Continue reading →
