If you asked me what I miss about meat you would receive a very long and convoluted answer. It’s quite likely that the explanation would leave you more baffled than you were to begin with. I have the unfortunate tendency to take after my mother and provide long-winded stories that leave the listener looking slightly vacant with a dazed expression and glazed over eyes. Most of the time this ‘habit’ is because I want to completely clarify a point, yet in doing so I provide far too much, and often irrelevant, information. This post is an attempt to practice ‘taming’ this deplorable trait.

Here are three things you should know about meat and I. Fact number one: I very rarely miss meat. Fact number two: Often it isn’t the meat itself that I miss but certain components that usually accompany it – grease, protein and pastry/bread. Fact number three: It’s the memories attached to particular meat dishes that are most enticing, not the food itself. Ninety-nine percent of the time fact number one overrides the other two  – why would I want to eat meat when there is an infinite number of tasty and nutritional vegetarian meals to savour instead? I won’t delve into why I’m vegetarian here – that’s when my long-windedness is at it’s very worst! Continue reading →

Sometimes all you feel like is a simple dinner. No complex flavours, just good heart-warming food. Something that feels like an indulgence but is actually quite healthy. One that produces left overs – an easy lunch the next day, tasty hot or cold. This roasted butternut squash with spiced chickpeas does all of the above and is super versatile – I have made it in summer and plonked it on a plate with a colourful salad, and in winter it goes beautifully with roasted brussel sprouts and cauliflower. The chickpeas on their own make a moreish snack… Continue reading →

    • Smoky Wedges

I often avoid buying sour cream as rarely does the recipe call for enough to warrant purchasing a 250g tub. I have searched high and low for anything smaller than that, but to no avail. If only you order it to the gram in the deli section. If it is, someone please tell me! You see our household just doesn’t seem to eat certain creamy substances that often. A block of cheddar? Gone in a week. Yoghurt? One of the items that sends me running to the shops at random hours. But ricotta? Philly cheese? Crème Fraiche? Sour cream? Not so much. I honestly cannot fathom why, but that’s just how it is. So when my dad dashed out for a tub on Monday night, not trusting the spice factor in my sweet potato enchiladas, it put me in a bit of a pickle. What to do with the inevitable left-overs, apart from bake with it?  In the end it was my sister who forced made the decision. “Wedges!!” She exclaimed with a fierce glint in her eyes and a stabbing motion of her fork. So wedges it was. Continue reading →
