Broccoli Salad with Asian Style Dressing

As the weather warms up it means one thing. Cockroaches. I bet you thought I was going to say something food related, right? Well, I’ll get to that, but for now we’re going to talk about cockroaches. Foul little critters, they are. Spiders? Meh. Snakes? What’s the big deal? Cockroaches?  I’m cool as a cucumber, of course. Ahem. While my sister has a minor breakdown in the corner over the one hiding in our vanity cupboard, I’m pretending to be all calm and collected. Upholding the image of a responsible older sister, rather than someone who wants to shriek and flap their arms like a little girl (what I actually want to do). I think it’s something to do with their hairy legs and their shell (I have nightmares about crunching down on one in my salad) and their feelers, all twitchy and wavy in the air. And they move fast. And jump. Some even fly. And sometimes, I swear they run straight at you. Cockroaches are sneaky little devils. Continue reading →

It was never my intention to post this recipe. I was making baked samosas for dinner – so much healthier than the traditional deep-fried ones and just as tasty – and felt that the meal was lacking in protein. I could have substituted some of the potato with mashed chickpeas/lentils, but didn’t want to alter the recipe too much. I’m always disinclined to do that on more ‘particular’ first-time recipes. Additionally, I would run the risk of being berated for ‘lying’ about making samosas for tea as they would no longer be samosas in a certain persons eyes. Feeling particularly lazy (and before you judge, rolling out and filling samosas isn’t exactly a walk in the park) I wanted something that would cook while the samosas were in the oven. Roasted chickpeas? Bingo. I’ve made these spiced chickpeas before, but despite seeing a number of recipes floating around the net, I’ve never tried roasting them. Silly me. I didn’t know what I’d been missing out on. I warn you now, roasted chickpeas are addictive. And very, very moreish. Forget crisps, wedges and pretzels, these are the snack that all the cool kids are eating. High in protein, low in salt and fat. Big on flavour. Talk about taste without waste! Continue reading →

One topic that is sure to come up regularly on this blog is that of our struggle to incorporate adequate protein into our diet. It usually results in an argument with me (the cook) on one side and my father and sister hotly disputing my decisions on another. I am determined to uphold my belief that food has the potential to reduce wastage in many different ways, one being wasted social opportunities – food is such a good way of bringing people together. However with our ongoing quarrels surrounding protein I fear that I may be proved wrong – a decent amount of ‘debating’ is healthy in any house hold, however I don’t want it to develop into something more than that, with food being at the root of the problem. Consequently I am on the hunt for a variety of different ways in which I can incorporate protein into our meals, without it always being in the ‘main’ dish. Continue reading →

I often avoid buying sour cream as rarely does the recipe call for enough to warrant purchasing a 250g tub. I have searched high and low for anything smaller than that, but to no avail. If only you order it to the gram in the deli section. If it is, someone please tell me! You see our household just doesn’t seem to eat certain creamy substances that often. A block of cheddar? Gone in a week. Yoghurt? One of the items that sends me running to the shops at random hours. But ricotta? Philly cheese? Crème Fraiche? Sour cream? Not so much. I honestly cannot fathom why, but that’s just how it is. So when my dad dashed out for a tub on Monday night, not trusting the spice factor in my sweet potato enchiladas, it put me in a bit of a pickle. What to do with the inevitable left-overs, apart from bake with it?  In the end it was my sister who forced made the decision. “Wedges!!” She exclaimed with a fierce glint in her eyes and a stabbing motion of her fork. So wedges it was. Continue reading →
