There are a number of culinary combinations that we take for granted. That just are. Raspberry and white chocolate, apple and cinnamon, pumpkin and pecan, orange and poppy seed…to question them would be heresy. I don’t plan to. But there’s a catch associated with accepting such combinations as ‘culinary rules’. We can be inclined to forget about or try others. Others that work nearly as well, or even better, yet are not exactly by the book. But why bother when you can go with a tried and tested combination? The case in hand for today is orange and poppy seed. Why, it’s a fantastic combination, particularly in baked goods such as these orange poppy seed muffins. However, it does mean that when I consider orange and seed/nut combinations, that is the only one that crosses my mind. It’s automatic. It was well and truly time to break down that block. How do you treat your stir-fry? In our household it’s been relegated to the ‘rubbish bin position’. That sounds quite unfortunate, however it’s actually an honorable position. The humble stir fry is the go to meal for when there’s an array of lonely old vegetables sitting in the fridge. It’s often a rush-job affair – throw in the vegetables in question (almost anything will suffice), along with a big dollop of ginger and garlic, blast it all with some serious wok heat, scrounge up a packet of noodles or rice and douse the whole lot in whatever sauces you’ve got on hand. Around here it’s usually Bragg Liquid Aminos (tastes akin to soy sauce) and sweet chilli sauce. Tofu and/or toasted nuts add a bit of pizazz, as well as a protein hit. Clean-out-the-fridge-meal done and dusted. Continue reading →

As the weather warms up it means one thing. Cockroaches. I bet you thought I was going to say something food related, right? Well, I’ll get to that, but for now we’re going to talk about cockroaches. Foul little critters, they are. Spiders? Meh. Snakes? What’s the big deal? Cockroaches?  I’m cool as a cucumber, of course. Ahem. While my sister has a minor breakdown in the corner over the one hiding in our vanity cupboard, I’m pretending to be all calm and collected. Upholding the image of a responsible older sister, rather than someone who wants to shriek and flap their arms like a little girl (what I actually want to do). I think it’s something to do with their hairy legs and their shell (I have nightmares about crunching down on one in my salad) and their feelers, all twitchy and wavy in the air. And they move fast. And jump. Some even fly. And sometimes, I swear they run straight at you. Cockroaches are sneaky little devils. Continue reading →
