Very rarely are things as bad as you predict them to be. For the past week a certain someone has been freaking out big time about starting a new job. A job that will only run for three weeks. A meager 21 days. To the point at which she’s had enough kittens to fill a cattery several times over. Fluctuating between being snappy at everyone/thing, mega-hyper and sitting listlessly on the couch morosely contemplating her ‘bad decision’, this certain someone hasn’t exactly been bundles of fun. However, as most first-days tend to prove, over-thinking is never helpful – it often leads to negativity and catastrophising. You see, the job really wasn’t all that bad. Yes it was a 10 hour shift, yes the only time one sat down was to go to the bathroom twice (over-sharing? Ah well), yes one has a blister forming from cutting so many vegetables/chicken/herbs etc. And yes one has a nasty burn on her forearm (the customary welcome-back-to-the-commercial-kitchen present), but all-in-all the shift was fine. Quite fun actually. My oh my, who would have guessed? Continue reading →

There are a number of culinary combinations that we take for granted. That just are. Raspberry and white chocolate, apple and cinnamon, pumpkin and pecan, orange and poppy seed…to question them would be heresy. I don’t plan to. But there’s a catch associated with accepting such combinations as ‘culinary rules’. We can be inclined to forget about or try others. Others that work nearly as well, or even better, yet are not exactly by the book. But why bother when you can go with a tried and tested combination? The case in hand for today is orange and poppy seed. Why, it’s a fantastic combination, particularly in baked goods such as these orange poppy seed muffins. However, it does mean that when I consider orange and seed/nut combinations, that is the only one that crosses my mind. It’s automatic. It was well and truly time to break down that block. Venture out into the unknown. Continue reading →

When I was in Melbourne last week I paid a visit to the Queen Vic Markets. It was foodie heaven. My poor friend was forced to wait patiently while I stopped at every single stall and gawped at the produce on display. I’m surprised he didn’t sneak off and find other things to do, rather than be associated with a complete nutter. There was SO much produce, all exceedingly fresh and, well, drool-worthy. If you’ve ever crunched into an apple straight from the tree or stained your lips (and let’s be honest, half your face) red from sitting in the boughs of a mulberry tree and shoving berry after berry in your mouth, you’ll understand my (slightly strange) infatuation with fresh fruit and veg. The asparagus in particular caught my eye. There was none of that awful, woody stuff that goes tough, stringy and bitter when cooked. These were crisp, green new season shoots. I needed to get me some of them, and soon. Obviously I wasn’t going to stash them in my bag and fly them back to Sydney (though the thought did flit through my mind), instead I was able to get my hands on a bunch at the local farmers market the following Sunday.
