cklerHaving reached the 100th post ‘landmark’ on Monday, I’ve been spurred on to contemplate the food blogging phenomenon. Reassessing why I’m running this Taste Without Waste fandango. Revisiting what motivated me to take it up in the first place. Coincidentally I came across a post over at The Curvy Carrot the other day, running along a very similar line of thought. Shannon’s blog actually played a significant role in nudging me on to actually start seriously considering creating my own food blog. I respect her outlook on life and agree with many of her food philosophies. I was thus inspired to motivate/impassion others in a similar manner. It was almost too fitting to come across this post at a time where I too am taking a moment to ponder the whats and whys of running a food blog. Continue reading →

      Meringues & A Chocolate Twist

Post 100. Gee Whizz. Are we there already? Appears so. I’m not going to ramble on about what a journey it’s been, what I’ve learned, the mishaps had long the way, blah, blah, blah – that can wait for 200. I am however going to introduce you to a recipe that I believe encapsulates the philosophy of Taste Without Waste. Corny, you say? Isn’t that a requirement of ‘birthdays’ or ‘milestones’? Since discovering that today would be the big one-oh-oh (which was, by the way, on Friday – sadly demonstrating how not switched on I am at the moment. We’ll blame the summer weather.) I’ve thought long and hard about which recipe to share. Agonised over it. Something I do well. Apple pie? Maple granola? Throw back to an old recipe? If so, which one? Nothing felt quite right. It had to be perfect (yet another unappealing personality trait, jeez this ain’t exactly revealing my good side is it?).

But wait a moment, isn’t food waste an important factor in all this? Well, yuh. Best place to look for authentic inspiration? The fridge. And whaddya know, there were two forlorn egg whites sitting there on the top shelf. Bingo. I keep telling myself I’ll compile a list of ways to use left over egg whites/yolks. We’ll get there someday. For now we’ll settle with one solution. Yep, you guessed it. Meringues. Continue reading →

There are a number of culinary combinations that we take for granted. That just are. Raspberry and white chocolate, apple and cinnamon, pumpkin and pecan, orange and poppy seed…to question them would be heresy. I don’t plan to. But there’s a catch associated with accepting such combinations as ‘culinary rules’. We can be inclined to forget about or try others. Others that work nearly as well, or even better, yet are not exactly by the book. But why bother when you can go with a tried and tested combination? The case in hand for today is orange and poppy seed. Why, it’s a fantastic combination, particularly in baked goods such as these orange poppy seed muffins. However, it does mean that when I consider orange and seed/nut combinations, that is the only one that crosses my mind. It’s automatic. It was well and truly time to break down that block. Venture out into the unknown. Continue reading →

Once upon a time in Shani’s world of cookies there were only two classifications. Moderately wholesome (rolled oats, nuts, dried fruit or honey tended to be defining features) or thoroughly unhealthy. The ‘healthy’ end of the spectrum didn’t exist.  In that world a cookie couldn’t be healthy. It was impossible. Indulgent just didn’t equate with nutritious. What a narrow world it was. Then one day it wasn’t anymore. Turns out it is in fact possible for a cookie to be good for you. Relatively speaking. We can’t be comparing cookies with watermelon – it just wouldn’t be fair for either party. Continue reading →

      Chocolate Brownies

I had a Monday from hell this week. Don’t you just love those days? The kind where nothing goes you way. Or at least it very much seems like that. The kind where you feel as though you’ve got your head stuck up a dead bear’s smelly butt all day. The kind where you initially fight the doom and gloom, convinced it’ll pass in an hour or so. Positive thinking all the way! That by lunchtime you begrudgingly acknowledge that whoever is ‘up there’ has it in for you, big time. That by mid afternoon you’re wracking your brain, trying to remember what bad deed you committed to deserve this particularly nasty bout of karma. That by 7pm you’re collapsed in a heap on the floor wholeheartedly believing that nothing bad can happen if you stay there, very still and pretend you’re invisible. Then the leg cramp kicks in and you know there’s only one solution left. One way to turn the day around. Face-planting into a plate of warm fudgy Chocolate Brownies. Emotional eating? Nothing quite like it, particularly with something as indulgent as these. And heck, you’re already apparently in the sin bin so what’s a little more wickedness going to do? Continue reading →
