Why is it that birthdays are always the event that causes one to stop and take stock of life? To put one in a contemplative mood, a reflective headspace. Today I reached the big two-oh mark. Two decades. If that’s not damn scary then I don’t know what is. Maybe you don’t freak out on birthdays. You simply acknowledge them and go on your merry way. Some people, however, aren’t quite so calm and collected – you’re looking at the girl who had a breakdown the day she turned sixteen after listening to Taylor Swift’s ‘Fifteen’ and realising she would never be fifteen again. Gosh, that’s not one, but two confessions I’d like to retract…birthdays also tend to prompt some people (I wonder who that could be?) to become brutally honest. But before such musings spill out in what is likely to be a serious case of word vomit, we need to acknowledge something important. That cannot be ignored. What’s that? Birthday’s need cake. And if not cake, then cupcakes. You see, it aint a birthday if there’s not some sort of sweet indulgence to be had. Unless you’re one of those people – choosing savoury over sweet? Humph. Panforte

Raising the question “what should I bake?” is a dangerous task at the best of times. It puts one in a particularly perilous position. What if one actually doesn’t want to make what is suggested, and in some cases demanded (I’m looking at you here, little sis)? You’d think I’d have learned by now. Hmph. Not the case. My younger sister’s response is often obscure, vague, or difficult and downright complicated to make. In her world of baked goods time-frames and effort required don’t exist. Dad’s tends to border on predictable, if not repetitive. Old favourites such as Bran Muffins or Zucchini Bread. The Brampton ‘classics’. When I raised the question with S and B mid last week I honestly didn’t know what response to expect. Conventional? Complicated? Kooky? Where does the Italian ‘cake’ Panforte sit? Somewhere amongst all three. Continue reading →

      Chocolate Self-Saucing Pudding

Please note: this is not a healthy recipe. Nor is it intended to be. Remember the adage everything in moderation? It applies here. For example, I haven’t made this pudding in over a year. That’s pretty good self-restraint. Until you take into account the various brownies and cookies and cheesecakes and so on. But that’s beside the point isn’t it? Isn’t it? This recipe is from the second cookbook I ever owned The Australian Women’s Weekly’s ‘Get Real: Make a Meal’. I loved that cookbook (and sadly still do), thinking I was a right groovy gal to have one with a title like that. In an act of revenge (don’t ask me what I did to initiate it, I haven’t a clue) my sister scribbled all over the front of it. I was horrified. How dare she desecrate my cookbook? Never mind that the recipes remained untouched. It was a cookbook. And it was mine. It seems that I was far too protective of my cookbooks, even at the age of eight.  Oh boy, that’s sad isn’t it? Sometimes things in the kitchen don’t quite turn out as intended. You start with a seemingly credible recipe, measure your ingredients meticulously, pop the mix in the oven and wait patiently  with your fingers and toes crossed.  Surely it will turn out right after all that. Yet, inexplicably, you draw from the oven an item that barely resembles the image on your recipe. “Oh god, is it even edible?” is the first thought that runs through your head. I like to call situations like this ‘divine intervention’, rather than admit that somewhere along the lines I messed up spectacularly. Take Wednesday for example – I followed a new recipe to the tee (an unusual occurrence), confident that in doing so nothing could possibly go wrong. However that faith meant thatI failed to see the warning signs going off in the background. I frowned at the cupcake batter in my bowl and tried to fathom just how I was going to pour it into the muffin tin when it resembled cookie dough. Despite thinking “Huh, I’ve never made cupcakes like this before” and my gut suggesting something was wrong, I ploughed on, resorting to squishing the mixture into the liners with my hands. I’m sure you can picture the result. Continue reading →

I think by now we’ve established that indulgence is perfectly fine, even necessary, as long as it adheres to the golden rule of moderation. How boring would life be without chocolate, or cookies or sweets or, gasp, peanut butter? I don’t even want to think about it. However, there’s no denying that finding a balance can be difficult. I don’t know about you but there’s been many a time when I’ve wandered into the kitchen for one cookie/square of chocolate/spoonful of peanut butter (please tell me I’m not alone on this one folks) and  overstayed my welcome. A while later I emerge cursing that I even I entered the kitchen, and vowing that next time I’ll have a stronger resolve. The whole “I’ll just have a little more”…”and a little more” ends up being an “oh heck, I’m here I’m might as well go the full hog”. So what if I told you there was a solution? And, even better, one that involves chocolate and cookies and sweets and, wait for it, peanut butter? Now we’re talking. Continue reading →
