      Action Packed Hiking Bars

Dad’s last request before leaving for his long-weekend hiking trip was “stock up the freezer!” Now that’s a dangerous phrase as I could easily have used it as an excuse to spend the whole weekend baking. However, I barely successfully managed to rein myself in and settle for a few freezer ‘must-haves’. One of which was the granola-style bar that he takes on hikes. For me one of the wonderful things about spending time ‘out bush’ is the sensation of being a million miles away from civilisation. Often that is far from the case – the road may in fact be a couple hundred metres away, yet one can’t help but feel peaceful. In such situations I also tend to dwell on Western society and how materialistically driven we have become – who needs a car when you have two legs to carry you? And why bother with razors and shower gel – surely it is possible to put up with fuzzy legs? The last thing I want is any reminder of how we become entrenched in a cycle of sating consumerist needs. So rather than pulling out a store bought, glaringly packaged muesli bar when the munchies set in, these hiking bars are a wonderful alternative. Continue reading →

    • Smoky Wedges

I often avoid buying sour cream as rarely does the recipe call for enough to warrant purchasing a 250g tub. I have searched high and low for anything smaller than that, but to no avail. If only you order it to the gram in the deli section. If it is, someone please tell me! You see our household just doesn’t seem to eat certain creamy substances that often. A block of cheddar? Gone in a week. Yoghurt? One of the items that sends me running to the shops at random hours. But ricotta? Philly cheese? Crème Fraiche? Sour cream? Not so much. I honestly cannot fathom why, but that’s just how it is. So when my dad dashed out for a tub on Monday night, not trusting the spice factor in my sweet potato enchiladas, it put me in a bit of a pickle. What to do with the inevitable left-overs, apart from bake with it?  In the end it was my sister who forced made the decision. “Wedges!!” She exclaimed with a fierce glint in her eyes and a stabbing motion of her fork. So wedges it was. Continue reading →

Please, please don’t let the name put you off! I could have changed it, in order for it to be a lot little more appealing. However, I couldn’t bear to alter it, when this soup has played such an important role in my ‘food life’. It would be blasphemy in a way, betrayal at the least. Strangely I actually don’t know how the name originated, but it does add to the mystery. What is not so mysterious is the contents of the soup. Pretty much anything, that’s what. My dad was brought up on a farm in rural Western Australia. Having moved from South Africa in the late 1950’s, my grandparents were starting a new life in a foreign land, with foreign people. Needless to say, things were tough for a start, and not just economically. This soup epitomises the meaning of ‘taste without waste’ in the most literal sense. Use what you have. And use it in a way that produces an appetising end product. Continue reading →
