    • Food Goals – Not Resolutions – for 2014

Food GoalsHaaappppy New Year! I hope you’re having a thoroughly enjoyable day. Unfortunately it’s reached the point at which the combined caffeine/sugar rush from coffee and black bean brownies is starting to wear off. Better get this post (the first for 2014!) underway before my head drops to my chest and I start drooling. Over exaggeration? Only slightly.

I’m not a fan of using the term ‘resolution’ around New Year. Am I wimpy for thinking it might be a cursed word? It doesn’t mean I don’t make ‘resolutions’. They’re just called goals instead. ‘Goals’ sounds less intimidating, less of an ultimatum and more hopeful. More achievable. It’s an everyday term. Which is what it should be. Why ‘reinvent’ yourself on just one day of the year? Admittedly it is a nice, convenient place to start. Nothing wrong with that. But should it not be the first step of many, rather than a leap off a cliff? Gotta keep things realistic. What then are our realistic food goals for 2014? Continue reading →

How do you treat your stir-fry? In our household it’s been relegated to the ‘rubbish bin position’. That sounds quite unfortunate, however it’s actually an honorable position. The humble stir fry is the go to meal for when there’s an array of lonely old vegetables sitting in the fridge. It’s often a rush-job affair – throw in the vegetables in question (almost anything will suffice), along with a big dollop of ginger and garlic, blast it all with some serious wok heat, scrounge up a packet of noodles or rice and douse the whole lot in whatever sauces you’ve got on hand. Around here it’s usually Bragg Liquid Aminos (tastes akin to soy sauce) and sweet chilli sauce. Tofu and/or toasted nuts add a bit of pizazz, as well as a protein hit. Clean-out-the-fridge-meal done and dusted. Continue reading →

How was your Christmas? All things jolly, I hope. After significant preparation in the days prior, ours was a laid back affair (isn’t it nice when it all pays off?). Whole-wheat crepes and a fresh fruit platter got the day off to a cracking start. A moderately fast paced walk along the beach was next…Gotta make plenty of room for Christmas lunch! Some simple prepping in the kitchen – carving the stuffed chicken legs and vegetarian roast-loaf, roasting some crunchy maple and cinnamon spiced chickpeas for nibblies and so on – was followed by the unwrapping of presents. It didn’t take long with so few of us, but to be honest I’m more interested in the food. A late lunch with the extended family was the main event. When overseas I’m always asked “what do Australians eat for Christmas dinner?”. There’s a number of other typical questions – “why isn’t your hair blonde?”, “do you have a pet kangaroo?”, “did you ride it to school?” but we’ll leave those for another day. Continue reading →

      Rocky Road

Things have been just a little busy around here lately. Actually, that’s an understatement. It’s been downright hectic. I’m sure our situation is far from unique. Preparing food for Christmas isn’t for the fainthearted. You’ve gotta have a pretty strong constitution to get through the festive period. The will to keep going when you just.cant.de-bone.another.chicken, or roll out more fruit mince pie pastry, or ice another spice biscuit. The guts to brave the zoo that is small town supermarkets on a Sunday (pretty much the one and only time they’re open on Sunday all year) and to deftly manoeuvre your cart around the other half-crazed, half-desperate shoppers. To have enough sense of dignity to not break-down sobbing in the cheese section because 150g of goat’s cheese is close to an hours wage. And you need more than one packet. It’s a good thing Christmas only comes around once a year. Continue reading →

Mushroom, Haloumi & Avocado Stack with Pesto

It’s time to stack. To layer, with a lazy supper/lunch/breakfast that’s low on fuss and big on impact. It might look a little piddly in the image – sorry about that – but that’s just because I couldn’t find any nice big Portobello mushrooms and had to settle for smallish field mushrooms instead. We’ll manage. It proves that looks aren’t everything. Salty, squeaky haloumi meets juicy grilled mushroom in this ‘open’ sarnie. There’s zesty pesto for added flair and creamy avocado because, well, avocado makes anything taste better. It’s a fact. And because we’re feeling a tad luxurious (it is the holiday season after all) we’re going to cut the crusts off the bread. Oh my. Continue reading →
