      Quick Chickpea & Mushroom Curry

Now folks, here’s my top tip going into 2016. Don’t go buy yourself a new laptop. No matter how old your current one is, cling on to it for dear life. Give it CPR if you must. Why? Because it will prove to be two of the most painful days of your recent existence. More painful than the half marathon. And far less rewarding. Well, if you’re moi anyway. Perhaps you’ve got a little leprechaun dancing around showering you with luck. Perhaps banks and Macbook Pros actually like you. And don’t find pleasure in trying to a) humiliate, b) inconvenience/time waste or c) completely and utterly zap any sort of hope from you. Right at this moment it’s 10.18pm (yay for typing out posts that you actually handwrote!) and I’m curled up in bed feeling like, well, poo. Sorry, there’s no other way to put it. Continue reading →

I’ve upped my game at Christmas. But not in the sense you may think. In that this year I let go entirely of the restrictive mindset. Ate whatever the hell I wanted. Faced the immediate consequences. Of sugar rushes. Of feeling far too full to be comfortable. Of having to lay sprawled out on the floor on my stomach, in front of the air conditioner to try and combat the food sweats. First round of dessert, followed by a main meal of red and green M&Ms, and finished with a second round of dessert was a thing. It might seem ridiculous to be proud of letting go, of indulging (okay, maybe over-indulging at times). But for someone who for the last three years has battled with over-monitoring their food, with eating far less than they really should have, it’s a big step. Things have been improving significantly in recent times – there’s still been stabs of guilt and/or the pangs of ignored hunger, but they’re rapidly reducing in frequency and ferocity. People talk about how we should think of those who are less fortunate than us during the Festive season. But why just now? Why does it have to be assigned to a certain timeframe? Is it guilt? That we are too busy? That we feel extra lucky around Christmas, so it is easier to spot those who aren’t so? That it is more obvious in the holiday period? The latter is certainly correct – yesterday as I battled my way through the crowds in central Melbourne to the blood bank (and no, I’m not a vampire) I observed a harried Christmas shopper very nearly step on a homeless man who was curled up to the side of the pavement. Call me an emotional wreck but I fall apart a little inside every time I see people who have faced true hardship. Admittedly it was especially bad when juxtaposed against the waves of frantic Christmas shoppers: stressed and focused on money. Needless to say I had much to ponder as I sat in the blood donor chair, hooked up to a plasma-extraction-machine-thingy. Continue reading →

I hope you’re well and truly into the swing of all things Christmas baking by now! Or at least more so than me. With less than a week to go I’ve done next to nothing in terms of producing Christmas related fare. Last year I was all over it like a rash. We had Vanilla Kippels, Fruit Mince Pies (admittedly the latter was posted after Christmas, but that’s just being super organised for the following year, right?), Christmas cake, dairy free steamed puddings…the lot. Time has run away from me this year. It doesn’t help when you’re barely around a kitchen long enough to cook normal meals, let alone special Christmas goodies. Mind you, there’s plenty that can be done in a week! You’d be surpised how much cooking can be packed into a day with a little dedication, a lotta elbow grease and some bangin/ tunes. Somehow this post has been lost in the abyss that is my blogging folder. Written over a year ago, it’s nigh on time to share it with you. And fitting too – we’re off down the coast for a few days, staying at a friend’s holiday shack.  We undertook a similar venture this time last year and among the many items we baked to take with us, this Apple and Date Cake was one of them (only thing was it didn’t last long because we were all too greedy). Although it won’t be accompanying us on this particular trip who knows, we may make it down there – the ingredients will most certainly be packed for if the right time arises! Continue reading →
