Putting this post up is like handing around those shocking kiddie photos of you. When you were about seven. Had no front teeth. Wore velvet leopard print long sleeve tops and purple flared jeans. 100% cringe-worthy material. But you’ve got to own it – it’s your past. Hence why I’ve finally mustered the courage to post this particular one; dodgy writing and shocking photographs to boot (circa July 2013). If anything I’d hope it shows progress. That I’ve finally learnt one very simply lesson in photography and styling: a) don’t take photographs at night (unless it’s summer and the lighting is still reasonable outside) – natural light is best b) don’t put food that is one colour on a tea-towel of a similar colour against the wall of the same colour. It. Doesn’t. Work. Don’t kid yourself. Well, there’s nothing left for it: go ahead and have a gander at a ‘baby photo/journal entry’ of tastewithoutwaste. Completely unaltered. You’ve been warned. I also, *small embarrassed cough, might or might not have been rather unwell over the last five days. Perhaps for the reasons stated below. Seems some things you never learn. Continue reading →

The only thing worse than battling through a university subject in the summer break (the first of two, why oh whyyyyyy do you do this to yourself?!), is a take-home exam for said subject in the summer break. You’re only just easing back into the whole study fandangle. Essays you might just deal with. You’ve written enough of those. But a take-home exam? No thank you. They say kindly the day before ‘it’ll be easy. If you’ve done all the readings and attended all the classes you’ll be just fine’. Hah. Liars. When on earth did we learn about the physiognomy of nature? Oh. Maybe that’s when you were daydreaming about what to cook for dinner. Mm that’s right. Big-whoops there. Continue reading →

Today my friend I’m going to share with you the fondness I have for a very special food group (yes it’s special enough to have it’s very own group of homies). That of the humble soup. The poor soup is so often underrated. Rudely relegated to the position of ‘starter’ or ‘diet food’. It may pass the test for acceptable lunch options, yet rarely makes it to the prime position of the day – the main meal (although I firmly believe that breakfast is the king of meals, yet that discussion is for another day otherwise we’ll be here for houuuuurrrrrs). I’m calling for a revolt. Are you with me? To put the wonder that is soup in its deserved place. Where it is appreciated for its diversity, its relative nutritional properties and its applicability to every season. Soup is not solely a winter meal. Why, ’tis a bowl of goodness to be savored year-round. Continue reading →

The theme of today’s post is being in a rush. That frantic action-stations kind of rush where you either slip into complete zen mode and float through the situation to your destination/goal, or where you run around like a headless chook/fall over your own feet/sit on the floor paralysed by how you’re not going to make it. There’s also that rather unique kind, one that results in you taking rather shoddy photographs (see exhibits a, b, c and d on this post) because you’re far too eager to consume the food being photographed. Which is ironic really, as it means the photos do very little justice to the specimen that is in fact knee-tremblingly tasty. You’ll just have to take my word for it: these muffins are to.die.for. And you won’t even die from them – each muffin contains just ¼ tsp olive oil and ¼ tsp sugar! Continue reading →

Sitting in the shade at a cute little café centred slap bang in the middle of a park is as good a place as ever to write blog posts. However as it draws closer to midday and the morning coffee/cake crowds disperse, the lunch smells start wafting by. Tantalising. The dad and small child seated at the table next to me have just ordered a rather large bowl of chips, and that juice I ordered over an hour ago is no longer cutting it in the stop-the-tummy-rumbles department. It’s times like this where I berate myself for not packing a small snack to consume on the way home, to keep the blood sugar levels from nose-diving to a babbling bambi level before one has a chance to prepare a decent lunch. Because when you’re starving, making lunch seems like an all too Everest task. This Chocolate Sultana Slice isn’t the healthiest of specimens, but hey it ain’t as indulgent (and heart-stopping calorific) as a brownie and it transports well. Continue reading →
