Apologies for this post. I’m sorry, I truly am. After a week filled with Christmas festivities the last thing you want to be looking at is more Christmas food. I mean, I’m a major fruit mince pie fiend, however simply looking at these photos makes me want to hurl a little. Toooo mucccchhh fooooooddd. No? Maybe you have more self-restraint. Maybe you don’t suffer from eating too many serves of cheesecake/plum pudding/rum balls/said fruit mince pies. And all the chocolate. Maybe your tolerance for fruit mince pies is bottomless. I wish. In any case we’re a bit behind the times around these parts – posting a recipe for fruit mince pies a week after Christmas. Sheesh. Who does that? Alternatively you could say we’re super duper prepared – one recipe already on the list for Christmas 2015. Heh, if only. Continue reading →

With the summer break stretching out ahead, there’s been plenty of time spent sitting at home looking at recipes. Poring over the numerous cookbooks that our share house has accumulated, collecting more cookbooks from the local library, stalking food blogs…it’s an addiction. An unhealthy one? I’ll leave that up to you. Rather than doing the more important things in life, such as washing that dress with the spilled Moscato on it from back in October (dear god, was it really October?! What a grot) a certain someone has spent a lot of time looking at recipes. It’s easy to become lethargic, to simply sit there and consider all the things one could be cooking. The other variance is to actually get off one’s butt and cook ‘all the things’, yet remain steadfastly disinclined to blog about them. Things are going to change. Honestly. Continue reading →

I discovered this gem when looking for recipes to use up leftover seeds/millet etc. when moving from Sydney back to WA late last year. The darn quarantine laws had us looking at throwing out roughly $100 of perfectly adequate nuts and the like. As if that was going to happen! It was a brilliant challenge to find various ways of using up the remaining items, and also reinforced the ethos behind tastewithoutwaste. Why, it would have been purely hypocritical to allow such food to find its way into the trash! These cookies were a particular success story, and have been made many a time over the past year, only to be gobbled up in a matter of moments. Continue reading →

It’s been a month since I finished exams, a month since I moved out of college for the summer. You’d think that would be plenty of time to get over the I-never-want-to-do-an-ounce-of-writing-or-study-ever-again funk and start blogging again in earnest. Hmmm not so. It’s taken a sunny day (sunshine always helps, does it not?), packing up a backpack and walking two kilometres to a park with a café (and a smashing selection of fresh juices) to finally get the ball rolling again. The will to cook/bake has been there in force, but the mere thought of sitting in front of a laptop to do anything more than look at other people’s recipes hasn’t been particularly welcoming. But not to worry…we got there in the end! And just to highlight how sparse blog posts have been over the last six months, this is a Chilli Con Carne I made back over the winter break (what seems like eons ago now). It may have been a long time coming, but boy it’s a ripper. Continue reading →

Somehow blogging tends to reveal facts about oneself that are usually kept tightly under wraps. Like alcohol it brings to the surface those quirks you only share with the very closest of friends. The terrible out of tune singing along to Taylor Swift (and that you know every.single.word), the shocking dance moves, the fact you can talk until the cows come home (and then some), the snorting when you truly laugh. Writing/blogging is a far easier method of divulging such quirks than in person. Another form of liquid confidence. And thus it’s important to know where your limits lie. We all know that far too much (of either) often leads to making a fool of yourself/doing or revealing something you regret…you know how it goes. Continue reading →
