Sorry peeps. No recipe today. I’ve just spent the last hour or two bashing my head repeatedly over my desk trying to pen a new ‘about page’. Okay, that’s a slight exaggeration, but it was pretty darn difficult all the same. Would you believe me if I said it was an awful lot easier to write about food than yourself? One can’t help but feel supremely egotistical when writing/talking about oneself. Have you said too much? Or conversely, have you left out the facts that actually matter? It’s a process filled with doubt. Characterised by backspacing. Re-typing. Backspacing again. Continue reading →

Every year as the cold weather sets in I staunchly declare that I will stick to my fitness regime, that I won’t succumb to those fatty/sugary/salty cravings and that I won’t complain about the rain/wind/grey skies. Hmph. Who are you kidding girl? When those sneaky winter blues and the “I-want-to-face-plant-into-a-bowl-of-fresh-summer berries, or more likely, a-big-fat-double chocolate-brownie-mm-mm” mindset emerges it’s good to be reminded that winter is a superb season. It provides a multitude of delicious culinary opportunities – soups, hearty stews, various bakes and pies resplendent with seasonal veg such as beetroot, cauliflower, brussel sprouts (yes, brussel sprouts), leeks, silverbeet and sweet potato…the list goes on. However, if you thought this was going to be a post incorporating some of the aforementioned healthy veg, you’ll be sadly mistaken. Despite the wonderful array of healthy seasonal recipes available, it’s the pastries, sweets and rich cheesy, cheesy, cheesy dishes that beckon.  Let’s blame it on our ancestors – after all they were hardwired to reduce their energy expenditure and increase their consumption of calorie dense foods as the air turned chilly. Mole-like burrowing under the duvet and second helpings of pudding is therefore justified. Just sayin’. Continue reading →

Apparently it is possible to have too much of a good thing. I’ve had plenty of opportunities to blog over the last fortnight, yet have not felt the inclination to do so. On arriving back at my mother’s home I made a beeline for the kitchen and immediately donned my apron. Unpacking could wait. An immense about of cooking ensued over the following days, with three dishes on the first evening alone. After twelve weeks of virtually being starved of all forms of cooking it was bliss to be back in the kitchen. However, spending nigh on a week relentlessly stirring, chopping, whipping, icing, baking, boiling and photographing takes it’s toll. In an I-don’t-want-to-even-think-about-food kind of way. Now that my friends is a rare occasion. Continue reading →

Ahhh another baking blunder. They seem to happen far more frequently than I’d like to admit. Or perhaps that’s because like with all ‘mistakes’ or embarrassing moments they tend to stick in one’s mind. Stand out. To act as reminders. Don’t do that again. No really, don’t. This particular boo-boo however, I will be repeating. On purpose. Take that you careful, cautious brain. At cookery school it was drilled into us “thou shalt not mess with baking recipes. Especially pastry.” Repeatedly. You’d go home on the bus muttering it under your breath. I can tell you that attracts some strange looks. Especially when you’ve still got a smear of flour on your face and butter on your arms. Why don’t people tell you? Is it funny? But yes we knew loud and clear not to mess with pastry. From the way our teachers ranted on and on and on about it, one was sure they would stimulate an apocalypse-style situation if one so much as measured our flour out one gram too much.        As I regularly have to remind my Northern Hemispherean friends, we in the South live a topsy-turvy life. Whilst many people are moving into the months of sunshine, and ice-cream, and refreshing cocktails, we in the South are flicking on that ‘hibernation mode’ switch. I’m currently spending two weeks of my winter break back in Western Australia. It’s rained. And rained. And rained. And then rained some more. It’s cold – enough so that we’re reaching for scarves and beanies and layer after layer of sweaters. Yeah, it’s nothing like a ‘proper’ winter with snow and howling winds (though we do get those from time to time) and below 0C temperatures, but for us it’s still damn wintery. Continue reading →
