The cooler Autumnal weather always generates strong feelings of nostalgia for England. They have been especially strong this year in Melbourne, with the prevalence of numerous large deciduous trees surrounding the residential colleges and university (sound familiar? I can’t help myself when it comes to Autumn leaves. It’s an odd fascination, I know). The varying red-golden hues take me back to my six-month student exchange program nigh on four years ago. As the days drew shorter and the darkness crept in, apple crumble became a mainstay pudding at family ‘Sunday dinners’. Like many other experiences, such as running around like a lunatic, kicking up the crisp leaves in the back yard – something I may or may not still do – Sunday dinners were quite the novelty. It wasn’t lunch, yet at 4pm it wasn’t quite ‘dinner’ yet either. Completely baffling. However, the ensuring pudding of apple crumble (occasionally interchanged with pie or the inherently classic  Victoria Sponge) was more than baffling, it was a pure shock. It. Wasn’t. Crumble. Surely castor sugar, flour, a dash of milk and butter did not equate to crumble topping? Turns out that one particular sixteen year old did not know her crumbles as well as she thought she did – there was, would you believe, more than one type. Continue reading →

Yet again we’ve had an absence of posts. Do you think I simply need to stop apologising? Cease to spout excuses? It appears as though the trend towards scattered, and for that matter scatty in general, posts is going to become the norm. Hmmm. Bu-ut. Yes, there’s always a but, isn’t there? If one had to justify the severe lack of posts over the past two weeks, it could be attributed to college rowing. An experience that slowly takes over your life, like that obsession with finding the perfect chocolate chip cookie recipe, consuming it bit by bit until you’re eventually reminded by others that there is in fact a world outside of your well insulated bubble. Once the regatta (or if we’re still using the chocolate chip analogy, you find the one) concludes you finally emerge from that all-consuming blanket of ‘rowing life’, like a rabbit blinded by headlights on a dark evening. Stunned. Disorientated.

Rowing involved food, plenty of food (carb-loading, anyone?). Why it even involved baking (homemade muesli bars are a must for any sporting event), yet what it  didn’t allow for was blogging. Continue reading →

What are you doing this mother’s day? Are you a cynic who slanders the mere thought of yet another commercialised holiday? Soppy cards, posh lunch deals, spa breaks, the lot. Do you quietly moan, yet celebrate it anyway in a more subtle manner? A bunch of fresh flowers or breakfast in bed. Or, do you wholeheartedly embrace the opportunity to celebrate? Flowers, cards, breakfast, lunch and a spa break to boot. I’m always torn when it comes to such events. Is it rude to ignore them? It is it an overt display of consumerism to embrace them? In the end I usually decide that ‘celebration’ is justified a) if the card is homemade (and by you, not from that funky store down the road) and b) if it involves good food (again, homemade is preferable). I gain an immense amount of satisfaction from creating healthier versions of much loved recipes.  A nutritional makeover. At times I fret over how just happy I become when the transformation is successful. Too happy. Regardless, you can’t deny that being able to eat favourite ‘unhealthy’ dishes more often (because, they’ve been, well, ‘healthified’) is cause for some celebration. The major downside of some ‘healthed-up’ versions is that they are often inaccessible or unappealing to many home cooks, either due to obscure ingredients or lengthy preparation practices. However, you need not be wary of this particular recipe – it’s not overtly brazen at all. Sweet, juicy roasted tomatoes, creamy pesto and whole-wheat pasta..why it’s virtually a simple weeknight meal! Continue reading →

      Chocolate Chip Cookies

This is yet another of those recipes you could make with eyes shut. Simple, yet classic. An old favourite, regardless of how old you are. Crispy on the edges, soft, buttery and chewy in the centre and with white, dark and milk chocolate chips…what’s not to like? Chocolate chip cookies are acceptable at any time of day. Truly. The original recipe actually calls for double the amount below, however I find that provides slighhhhtly too much temptation. They’ll disappear pretty quickly, but that’s not really a bad thing is it? Better than downing half a plate in a sitting – why is it that the regret only hits after you’ve lost count? By all means make a double batch and freeze a bag or two. Just remember that you were warned, when you find yourself stealthily (or so you’d like to think) sneaking a few in the middle of the night.
