      Fruit, Seed & Walnut Bread

Going out for breakfast to celebrate special occasions/the completion of something significant is a tradition in my family. Fortunately it didn’t take much to cajole two of my housemates into doing so after I had finished working at the Australian Open. We ventured to a brilliant joint on the other side of Melbourne and were duly rewarded with the three meals we ordered. However (there’s always a however isn’t there?) I was also able to smugly proclaim that whilst their fig, apricot and pistachio loaf was very tasty indeed, it did not quite live up to that made by yours truly. Boastful? Moi? Let’s just say that this Fruit, Seed & Walnut Bread is one of the best things you’ll ever put down your gullet. Modest, I know. Continue reading →

Very rarely are things as bad as you predict them to be. For the past week a certain someone has been freaking out big time about starting a new job. A job that will only run for three weeks. A meager 21 days. To the point at which she’s had enough kittens to fill a cattery several times over. Fluctuating between being snappy at everyone/thing, mega-hyper and sitting listlessly on the couch morosely contemplating her ‘bad decision’, this certain someone hasn’t exactly been bundles of fun. However, as most first-days tend to prove, over-thinking is never helpful – it often leads to negativity and catastrophising. You see, the job really wasn’t all that bad. Yes it was a 10 hour shift, yes the only time one sat down was to go to the bathroom twice (over-sharing? Ah well), yes one has a blister forming from cutting so many vegetables/chicken/herbs etc. And yes one has a nasty burn on her forearm (the customary welcome-back-to-the-commercial-kitchen present), but all-in-all the shift was fine. Quite fun actually. My oh my, who would have guessed? Continue reading →

Date, Walnut & Maple Steamed Puddings

Running in the rain raises one of the most tricky of questions in life. Is it bad for you? You’re sopping wet, you might be cold. You’re bound to get a cold. Or is it good for you? What’s a little moisture going to do? You sweat anyway! You’ve still exercised, you’re probably feeling pretty damn chuffed with yourself for going out there and battling the elements. I’m inclined to lean towards the latter – why, as long as you dry off properly once you reach shelter, there’s really no harm done. And splashing in the puddles is good for the soul, is it not? These Date, Walnut and Maple Steamed Puddings put one in a similar conundrum. Are they unhealthy? I mean, they are dessert after all. Or are they healthy, relatively speaking? Continue reading →

There’s a natural progression of phases to go through when you’re under the weather. There’s the initial denial stage with the mantra – “I’m not getting sick, I’m not getting sick, I’m not getting sick”. Realisation soon dawns with an “ohhh bugger” and you immediately try to ‘heal’ it by downing any super-food within reach. The next stage a.k.a accept-you’re-sick-dammit-and-get-on-with-life is all fine and dandy until you hit the slight glitch of not-being-able-to-exercise-do-anything-remotely-active. Sometimes it takes doing said exercise (often during the intermittent period of “woop I’m no longer sweating enough to make my own swimming pool, I must be better!) to realise the sheer stupidity of doing so – running like a 96 year old nana (apologies to any fit 96 year old lasses out there, I’m sure you run more than gracefully) and then having to cling to a fence railing because you’re legs are starting to give way isn’t going to help you recover from a 3-day long fever. In fact it might just make you very nauseous. Cue the next phase: staring listlessly into space contemplating food (and you’re existence, yep we’re being melodramatic). You probably should eat something. Your stomach heaves at the idea. Cue the humble loaf of bread – and it’s metamorphosis into, well, wonder bread. Continue reading →

Spending New Years Eve/New Years Day battling a raging fever isn’t ideal. Far from desirable. Of all 365 days of the year you go into 2015 simultaneously sweating like a pig and shivering like a kitten caught in the rain. Woop woop! Yet whilst it’s not been particularly pleasant, there’s really nothing to  complain about. Sure I may whine about being unable to ‘properly exercise’ for two days in a row (two whole days). I might fret about the fact that – heaven forbid – I have to remain curled up on the couch in the biggest and baggiest dress I own (hellllooo clammy skin) reading until the worst of the fever passes. Big deal. Count yourself lucky girl. It’ll pass in due course. In any case a little sickness every now and then is a good reminder to value one’s good health. And of course food plays a significant role in ensuring that one stays bright and bouncy. Continue reading →
