    • Bobotie

This post was scheduled to go up last Monday. Clearly my technological skills are not up to scratch! Anyway, here it is: a week late but here all the same. Bobotie. Looks revolting. Tastes fan-tiddly-astic. “Hold up a sec”, you say. What on earth is Bobotie? I’ll forgive you for asking. Unless you’re South African, or of South African descent it’s highly unlikely that you’ve come across this particular specimen. The traditional version consists of a sweet, spicy beef mince sauce, topped with an eggy layer, dotted with bay leaves. Think Sheperd’s pie on steroids. Or magic mushrooms. The ingredients list is most peculiar – chutney, jam, bread soaked in milk, lemon juice, curry powder….but it works in a most satisfying way. Have a little faith. Continue reading →

Would you believe it’s been a gloriously sunny today? That’s right, actual sunshine. Not warm, but sun all the same. Blue skies. A light breeze (though, wearing a flippy skirt was not a wise move)…all that jazz. Considering it’s first day back at university, it’s nice to have some brightness in the world. Lectures…what were those again? In all honesty it’s good to slide back into days that have some form of structure. Days, that no longer meld effortlessly into the next, into one big blob of ‘what did I even do/accomplish in that time?’. Deadlines aren’t all that bad. Truly. To celebrate the impromptu burst of spring weather – there are even, shockingly, yellow daffodils blooming in the grounds – we’ve got a light refreshing meal on the cards. ‘Vegetable and Tofu Bowl’ may sound less than appetising, but trust me on this one. Go on, I dare you. Continue reading →

As I regularly have to remind my Northern Hemispherean friends, we in the South live a topsy-turvy life. Whilst many people are moving into the months of sunshine, and ice-cream, and refreshing cocktails, we in the South are flicking on that ‘hibernation mode’ switch. I’m currently spending two weeks of my winter break back in Western Australia. It’s rained. And rained. And rained. And then rained some more. It’s cold – enough so that we’re reaching for scarves and beanies and layer after layer of sweaters. Yeah, it’s nothing like a ‘proper’ winter with snow and howling winds (though we do get those from time to time) and below 0C temperatures, but for us it’s still damn wintery. Continue reading →

Now if you asked me to give an impromptu speel on fair trade v free trade/third world debt/the transatlantic slave trade/BRICS/the scramble for Africa you’d receive a a well put together, mostly coherent piece. At least we’d hope so, considering that’s what I’ve been studying all day. But if we were to discuss food? It’d be a pretty poor effort on my part. Unusual indeed. You see, I talk about food a lot. If you’re having a conversation with me, food will come into it at some-point. Guaranteed. Today? I’ll eat it yes, but discuss it? No. I’d rather be spending that time eating some more (study munchies, anyone?). Therefore, in lieu of Monday’s post we’re taking another trip back through the ‘not-so-good’ archives with this ‘gem’ from August last year. Since then my aptitude for using food processors has improved significantly – and one would hope that the photography (and writing for that matter) skills have followed suit! Continue reading →

      Vegetarian Moussaka

Some things in life we can guarantee. Amidst all that uncertainty, those big questions in life – is it going to be warm or cold today? (in Melbourne you can never be sure) do those jeans actually look good on me? (might as well admit we’re all a little superficial at times) do I want cereal or toast for breakfast? (such a dilemma) – there is one thing you can be sure of. With 100% certainty. What’s that, you ask? Why, that you won’t miss the lamb mince one bit in this Vegetarian Moussaka. Even if you’re a dead set carnivore. Kidney beans cover your back in the protein department and meld effortlessly with the rich tomato sauce. Cinnamon works it’s thang, transforming a typical tomato sauce into something inherently Greek…a spice not just reserved for the sweeter side of cooking! Soft slices of potato and sautéed eggplant sandwich everything together, with a creamy cheese sauce seeping through the gaps. A decent scattering of cheese – yes more cheese – produce a decadent melty, golden brown topping, that bit you save for last (or eat first if you’re one of those people). You draw the dish from the oven, hot and bubbling, it’s rich aroma permeates through the air…. Continue reading →
