How’s your Monday going? Did you groggily rise from bed, inhale a mug of coffee and waddle out the house bouncing off the door frame? Or did you spring from sleep, fully refreshed and ready to face the week ahead? The first step to getting back into blogging regularly is to scrounge through previously saved drafts that somehow haven’t quite made it to the little blue ‘publish’ button stage. Here’s one of them. Particularly relevant due to the discussion around Monday. Hah. We’re getting a little bit clever in our cop-out (from up to date) posts. Cheerio. Continue reading →

I have a little sister. You might of heard of her before around here. How we pined after cookies that were out of our small-child reach. How we dealt calmly with the cockroach incident. I call her little. But it’s becoming a far stretch to do so. You see, she’s ever so slender but really not so little – a graceful gazelle that stands taller than moi, the aardvark. Pure habit I guess. Or a way of convincing myself that because she is little I shall always know best. What a strong inference. Perhaps I just call her ‘little sister’ out of fondness. I mean she’s sexy as all get out, but if I went around talking about my ‘sexy sister’ people would shoot me strange looks and subtly scuttle away sideways, until they could turn around and run, run, run awaaaaaay. We’ve had a mini heatwave here in Melbourne these last few days. A tantalising taste of the summer yet to come. And it’s been a long time coming. After weeks of cold, relatively damp, and at times incredibly windy, weather we’re more than ready to emerge from those thick woollen coats, eye’s blinking in the foreign sunlight. Ehhh it’s not that bad. But yay for summer! Spring puts a well, spring, in your step. There’s new hope. Tasks that before seemed momentous now appear achievable. Fatigue is somewhat more manageable. Sleep deprivation not quite so bad. I think we all agree that it’s easier to get up early when the sun is shining through your window! The summer break is just around the corner – forging your way through the wall of study/work/other tasks becomes that little bit easier. And even more so when you’ve got a refreshing plate of salad to dig into! Continue reading →

Gee it’s been a while. Scratch that. A fair bit more than a while. The past few months have seen me picked up by a cyclone, whirled about, flipped into the eye for a brief moment of calm, and then thrown headfirst back into the whirlpool of uni/college/work/travel/life-in-general. I’m close to being spat out for good. Whumped down on the ground, hair mussed up (I really should get it cut – been meaning to for weeks now – not that you want to know), rather exhausted but otherwise unscathed (here’s hoping). You’ll be hearing far more from this scatter-brain after that. Give it six weeks or so. And I’ve missed you. No, seriously. I don’t do soppy but amidst the crazy happenings of the past few months, there’s been an ouchie in my chest that continues to expand ever so slightly as time goes on. A void that craves connection with the culinary world – to invent, to cook, to write, to discuss, heck to even be haunted by it in your dreams. And no that doesn’t mean being chased by a giant saucepan – there are those of you out there who’ll know what I mean. I’ve maybe even missed photographing. Now that means something. I’m telling you. I’m currently in class being taught how to set up a travel blog for one of our assessments. Huh. Think we can check the ‘yeh-I-know-how-to-blog’ box, thank you very much! After trawling through old posts I realised that this particular number hadn’t been published yonks back – some pea-brain forgot to hit the ‘publish’ button! No more faffin’ around – here it is.

Right peeps today it’s time to get serious. Don’t look at me like that. I do mean it. We’ve got something to talk about. Something that for all we claim it isn’t, is still taboo. And no it’s not your kinky bedroom adventures. That you can keep to yourself thank you very much. Today we’re talking about mental health. Among young adults (if spoken about at all) it’ll be in hushed voices, as though it’s something that only someone else could suffer from. The other option? We joke about it. Laugh it off. I know I’m culprit to it. Something not going quite right? Send yourself up about it. Pretend it really ain’t that bad (admittedly sometimes that’s the truth – over dramatizing is not completely unfamiliar territory). Sure, this can be a way of bringing something to the surface that you may not otherwise have had the guts to, yet it also dismisses the reality of the issue, diminishes the significance. Hey, it’s actually okay to admit that life’s a touch tough at the moment – perhaps more than a touch – and to not make a joke out of it. Continue reading →
